Mower Will Not Start?

My Murray riding mower will not start. It has set up for a while and has never mowed any grass. The motor will turn over a few times and then nothing else,

There are so many things that should be done when a mower has set up over a few months and one that has set up longer will need even more checks or you will continue to have problems and could completely disable the mower.
Most likely you will have to drain all of the gas and replace it with fresh gas (you may have to remove the gas tank to completely remove all of the sludge that has built up over the years).

You can take the battery to an auto parts store and ask them to check it for you.
You will need to replace all filters (could be 2-4 filters), check the solenoid and the carburetor will probably need cleaning.
You will probably need to replace several lines also.

Truthfully, if all of this is not something you usually do, I would recommend you take the mower to a good repair shop and pay for an overall tune-up.

If you still wish to try this yourself, you can always join a mower forum and ask your questions as these members are much more likely to steer you in the right direction so you'll know what to start with.

This could be a few things, check battery, spark plugs, filter. You can also check your fuel if your mower has been sitting with old fuel during the season elements.

I would start with removing old fuel, and starting with new.

You may have to clear out the fuel line.

I think the problem is in bad gas. When gas sits for many months, for example during the off-season, it will eventually break down. There is gumming up the fuel line and carburetor in the engine. I think this is preventing your riding mower from starting.

Any engine that sits unused for long time periods can develop problems. Try draining all the old fuel and lines, change the spark plug, clean or change the air filter, charge or replace the battery, change the engine oil and filter, grease all fittings for wheels and steering, then refill tank with fresh gas, and mower with new oil. Make sure the cutting blades are sharp and balanced, the underside of the mowing deck is scraped clean of old grass, and add air to the tires if needed.

This SHOULD BE ANNUAL MAINTENANCE. If possible, you should either drain fuel from mower when you put it away for the off season, OR add fuel stabilizer to the fuel tank to prevent the gas from going stale. All of these items will keep your mower pretty much problem free, if done every year. Riding mowers are too expensive to just put away without regular care, and expect them to come to life in the spring. Good luck !!!!

Riding lawn mower need 3 things to start: gas/air mix, spark and compression. The most possible reasons for a riding mower cranking over but not starting are:

1. Bad or no gas
You'll need to be sure your gas is fresh. Gas older than one month is likely stale. Remove and clean the carburetor gas bowl.
2. Gas valve off
3. Choke fault
4. Plug wet / faulty
5. Plug wire off
6. Bad battery
7. Air filter blocked
The air filter needs to be checked every 25 hours of use.
8. Gummed / faulty carburetor
9. Coil failure
10. Faulty control module
11. Flywheel timing off (shear-key)
12. Engine compression / valve fault.
First make the basic checks:
oil level check (maybe it won't start because oil level is low);
fuel level check;
fuel tap on;
air filter check;
plug wire on;
choke applied.
Then follow the correct starting procedure. All this is described in detail on this site:
