Painting Glass Blocks?

How many coats do you have to put on to get proper coverage so your brush strokes do not show with lights inside the block?

At least two. After the second coat dries, hold the block up to the light. If necessary, apply a final coat.

Steps for painting on glass:

  1. After you have etched or frosted the glass transfer your design to the glass.
  2. You will need to undercoat the area with black gesso first.

  4. Apply the first undercoat of black gesso to the glass block and let it dry.
  5. Put a light inside and see if you can see your brush strokes, or light shines through.
  6. If this happens, you will need a second coat of undercoat.
  7. Once you no longer see your brush strokes or light shining through you can start painting your design.

Painting glass blocks.

  • If you sand the surface you can use any paint.
  • If you do not sand use glass paint.
  • Two to three coats should do.
  • Be sure to let dry in between coats.
