If you have an existing basil herb plant growing (or know someone who does) you could propagate and grow basil very quickly versus planting seeds.
You'll only need a few cuttings. Place the basil cuttings into a cup with water and monitor. If needed, replace water or add more water.
7/26 - I placed sweet basil cuttings in a cup
7/29 - roots appeared
Within a week, the roots are 1.5"-2" long and ready to transplant in soil. Now watch your basil grow.

Basil is my favorite herb. I will try this next time. :)
In our experience with basil propagation it took one week to have the tiniest hint of root growth. Within 2 weeks we had long roots and our Basil was ready to be transplanted.
Yes, the photo above it only took a few days for those roots to appear. :) Now it's really long and been ready for soil but I'm a little busy so I've procrastinated.
