Read Expiration Dates on Canned Goods

Gold Post Medal for All Time! 969 Posts

A can of mandarin oranges that has gone badI recently opened a can of mandarin oranges. The smell was fine, but the can had turned a deep gray inside. A quick taste test said it was not edible. It tasted of metal. I looked at the expiration date and they had been in my room mate's pantry for 3.5 years.

Not all cans bulge when they go bad. Sometimes, they quietly go bad and no one is the wiser until they get sick. Check the dates. If you forget to do that, check the inside. It should never ever look like this. For the seasoned cooks out there, this might be old news. But for those just starting out, this is word to the wise.

Poor But Proud.

Thanks to both for your feedback. Sometimes if you take the can back to where you bought it, they will do more than the manufacturers and quicker, too. Once, I sent a receipt back to a soup manufacturer and it took 6 weeks to get a check back for 1.62!

So after the .48 stamp I was in the red. I think sometimes they make it so hard to get your money back that we give up.

I generally use a brightly or strongly colored pen such as a Sharpie and mark the expiration date on the top and side of the can. I also write what the can contents are on the lid to make it easier to see (my canned goods are in a basket).
