Recovery Time for Dog with Parvo?

Recovery Time for Dog with Parvo - two Pit Bull terriersMy baby girl Sasha is about 2 and half years old and she got parvo, how she got it I don't know. She has not been in contact with other dogs or feces for that matter, but she got it. She has been with the vet for a week now and she is still the same. My question is what are her chances of surviving this. Her puppy got it cuz of her and she is now eating and drinking, but still at the hospital. I'm really worried about Sasha. Please what can you tell me? Sasha is the white one.

Parvo can last a few weeks. If your dog is drinking she has a chance. What does the vet say?

Hi, I know this post is old but I'd really like to know if your dog survived. My dog has just been confined to a clinic because of parvo.

Our vet says his chances are slim but I'm hoping for the best.

The vet can keep you up to date but if she's there and stable, it can take up to a month for it to clear.

It used to be that dogs who got parvo did not live. Its only been in the past few years that medical vet services have developed to the point that many now survive.

However, it can take a couple months.

Many people think that Parvo is a virus that only affects puppies but that is not the case - as you have experienced. Dogs that have survived a week or longer (and with a vet) will most likely survive but total recovery time is long.

From what I have read about this virus, the older dog has a better immune system than a puppy and perhaps would not be affected as much as a younger dog - unless - they have other health problems.
Hopefully you will be seeing great improvement in both dogs and your vet should be able to answer any questions about any problems either dog is having.
Cleaning up any area the dogs have been is a big job so I hope you have information on what steps to take before you bring your doggies home.
here is a link to a site that has a lot of information about this virus.

My dog is a year old, he just came down with it, give him amoxicillin, Pedialyte, around the clock. He is coming back to us, keep them hydrated, give lots of love, force food, I gave my dog a syringe of bacon fat, egg whites, around the clock, also I made salt packs, you have to have help with this, put alot of salt in a cup add alittle water until it gets thick, put on gloves, you and your helper hold mouth open and put a hefty amount on spoon and force mouth get him to swallow it, even if he spits some out, he is going to shake and fuss, but the salt kills infection, it makes your dog drink water, a vet told me to do this, my dog was vomiting and lifeless, he is barking, we are so happy

August 24, 20172 found this helpful

Um...salt doesnt kill infection. Toonmuch salt will probably kill your dog. Can cause heart arrhythmias and Salt will dehydrate your dog more. Wow dont give this advice to ppl. Smh!

She started vomiting white foam though. Should I be alarmed?

September 18, 20170 found this helpful

did she survive?? Going through the same right now :(

September 28, 20170 found this helpful

Of your dog is vomiting foam you should immediately take her back

November 19, 20170 found this helpful

My sister told me when my dog was throwing up white foam that my dog was still to dehydrated. Make sure you give him water until the throw up is not foaming and get him to a vet to stop him from throwing up.

November 21, 20170 found this helpful

You need tell the vet and they will give you medicine to stop the throwing up. As soon as possible give them a lots of water better pedialite every hour n the hour and try organic baby chicken and or turkey.

The food will help. Also give a little honey to keep there sugar levels up.

I am currently going through my 11 week old great Dane puppy battling parvo. The vet had told us the foamy vomit is from dehydration. Check your pups gums, if they are mostly white with little pink he is dehydrated. Used the unflavored Pedialyte and make sure it says it has zinc on the bottom right. You may have to force it with a syringe if he doesn't willingly drink it. It tastes just like water. But don't do any salt. Don't use Gatorade or Powerade because they contain salt. Salt does make you want to drink but in dogs it dehydrated them. My baby spent 2 days in the vet. She was in BAD shape. When we showed up at the vet she was dying. They got her well enough to come home her symptoms started a week ago today. 6/2/18 they say the first 72 hours are the most critical. I am sure if I knew it was parvo I could of treated her at home.
The best thing you can do is give him antibiotics, lots of fluids, things like water, clear Pedialyte, chicken or beef broth. There is a product called bulldog it's like a Powerade made for dogs. As long as your pup is drinking they have a chance. They won't eat for some time. But keep offering food to them. Bland diets, things like plain chicken, just book a chicken breast no seasonings or canned chicken, rice... This virus takes a huge toll on these babies intestines so give them time, lots of love and keep trying don't give up. But I would for sure get them to the vet because they can give you the antibiotics needed to get your babies healthy again. They gave my girl 3 to take home and she spent 2 days in IV fluids and antibiotics and tube feed, potassium and more. But she needed it because she was bad, her sugar and potassium was really low. And her white blood cell count was dang low at 600 normal is between 6000-1700... By day 2 her white blood cell was 4000. White blood cells are very important because if theirs gets to low they are more prone to secondary infection and the secondary infection is what kills parvo pups. So they need antibiotics.

My 4 month old puppy just had parvo. I never took her to the vet. I did it on my own. I gave her 35 ml of pedialyte every hour around the clock. On the 4th day she started drinking and I fed her scrambled eggs and boiled chicken 3 times a day. On the 5th day She is finally eating and drinking on her own. She tries to pay hard but still becomes a little weak. Keep your dog hydrated. And pray

My fur baby is a year old and we're on day 3 of treatment. Vets do not help give you any hope at all. She is still not out of woods. Their is still vomiting and diarrhea. How did you hold yourself together through this? This Hurts.

My little girl is five months old and came down with the virus three days ago, it's a terrible thing to have to watch something you love go through so much pain and discomfort but with all this we are doing with the medication and using a syringe to give her liquids she is getting up and drinking from her water thanks to the grace of God

Hi, it's tough. I didn't sleep for 3 days, the 1 night I noticed my baby getting worse and the 2 nights she spent in the vet for care. I. Still going through it and still not sleeping because I am up every hour checking on my sweet girl. She is out 3 months old. And she was dying when we got her to the vet. She started her symptoms on a Sunday they were mild symptoms and when she vomited we saw worms so we assumed that it was the worms causing it. So we treated her at home for the next few days at home for worms. By Wednesday she was lethargic and non responsive. She was dying and in bad shape. We rushed her to a vet that is open 24/7 and when we got there they took her back immediately and started her on fluids and antibiotics and other stuff. They checked her sugar and potassium and they were dangerously low. So they started her on a ton of stuff. They checked her blood work and her white blood cell count was dangerously low at 600, normal is between 6000-17000. She was barely hanging on. So we opted her to stay the night. $700 I call the next day and that's when they had told me about her white blood cell count. So we had her stay another night to continue treatment. When I called the next day they said she was bright and more alert and her white blood cell count went up to 4000, still not out of the woods m but all her vomiting and diherrea had stopped. And she was drinking water willingly. So I picked her up that night another $500. It's expensive. And it's tiring, and time consuming. We only had her for a month she is only 12 weeks old I cried. But then I thought what good is this to her. She needs me to be strong for her. If I can't be strong for her who can. So I sucked it up and was strong but struggling for my baby because there was that uncertainty that she was not going to make it. Every time my phone rang I got worried it was the vet calling me to tell me she wasn't doing foot. But it was the opposite. Even though the news was never amazing news it was always news telling me she was progressing but slowly. And that's the biggest thing about this is it's a waiting game. And it take so much time. The thing that kills these babies is dehydration... And mostly secondary infection. The virus just eats away at their intestinal lining which causes the vomiting and dierrha and that causes the dehydration that's why a lot of people who have home success are telling everyone they are around the clock forcing fluids. They need the fluids to rebuild that lining. Beef broth and chicken broth cooled of course are the best because it hydrates and gives a little nutrition. Antibiotics help because it keeps their immune system building up. Another thing that happens with this is a funky drunk like walk. It's normal it's is because they lay and beco weak so when they get up to use their muscles it is hard on them and causes them to walk funny.
Good luck. I will return in a few days and let you know how my baby did.

My 4 month old puppy is on day 12 of parvo. She was at the vet's for 10 days, with IV's and a plasma infusion. She's home now, but recovery is going to be hard. She was thin going in- extremely active. She had had all her vaccinations. Vet said it was a strain that was incredibly harsh. Worst parvo she'd seen in 20 years. Now I'm feeding a high calorie gel, along with blue buffalo basics wet puppy food. Truly hoping we can get weight back on, and diarrhea is still an issue, even though it's not bloody anymore. Good luck!

PARVO REMEDY! I swear IT WORKS. I just saved 4 puppies that had parvo. Took one to the Vet and she DIED while at the Vet's care.

3 oz Sulfatrim
1 small bottle of Peptobismol
1 tablespoon salt
1 tablespoon sugar
2 egg whites
5 ice cubes
Mixed all together and give no less than 3ml every 8 hours.

It saved my puppies. Two of them were at the bloody diarrhea and vomiting stage. The other ones were lethargic.

How many days did you see any improvement on your puppies feces from the time you started medicating them? We started aug 28 and it's now the 30th yet the pups feces is still liquid but with solid form. He is super active though. Already playing around and eating and drinking with no problem but just the poop. Thank you

Wow. Does this really work? I have a 4mos old pitt w parvo. I have her home w antibiotics and a gel for electrolytes, also giving pedialyte and a tablet to control nausea and vomiting. It's only the 2nd day of diagnosis and medication, should I try this or wait to see what happens after the 14 day treatment I received from the vet.

Where can i get Sulfatrim

September 21, 20170 found this helpful

My furbaby is 9 weeks old.
What day did you start this treatment?
I'm on day 4 of the virus but only day two of treatment I got her vomiting to stop. But her poop looks like dark brown thick gravy. The Emerg Vet I took her to told me to put her down. So I took her home and started giving her Pedialyte with water and I boiled chicken and am using the broth. All she wants to do is sleep but she gets up and runs to the pee pad to go potty. I have to force and everything. I read to use an egg and Pedialyte.
