Recycled Magazine Art

The completed recycled magazine art. I made this as a gift for a friend who has a band called Black Cat Road. I used the back of a broken guitar, magazine page (black for the cat), sheet music, black shoelaces for the trim, and I attached a mini washboard, as the lead singer plays a washboard. The pages are rolled and glued using a glue stick (not the gel ones, as they are too sticky). They are cut to size and glued using Mod Podge, then the entire piece is sealed with Mod Podge, then sealed with clear spray acrylic.

Supplies:

30 Magazine pages
30 sheet music
4-5 white glue sticks
1 Mod Podge
1 guitar back, or old plastic signs such as political, etc. cut to shape/size
3-4 black shoelaces - 3-4 long ones
1 paintbrush
1 scissors
1 Clear acrylic spray paint
3-4 wooden skewer
1 hot glue gun and glue sticks

Steps:

It is difficult to determine exactly how many pages you will need, so I usually spend a few evenings rolling a bunch of magazine pages while watching TV. Starting at the lower corner, use a wooden skewer to roll the page, add glue stick glue as needed, securing the end with a final bit of glue stick.

Once you have a good pile, determine the design on your piece. I started by using the black pages to make the cat. I use a small pair of scissors specifically for this purpose, as they will probably get glue on them. Cut the pieces one at a time to size, and glue them on using the paintbrush and Mod Podge. Once the cat was done, I started on the background using the sheet music pages.

Once all the pieces are glued on, seal the entire piece with Mod Podge, and let it dry overnight. You can add another coat if you so desire.
Once the piece is completely dry, spray with clear acrylic spray. I used gloss. I did a couple of coats, letting it dry completely between coats.

Once it was completely dry, I used a hot glue gun to glue the shoe lace on the edges (cutting off the ends of each lace). I added a picture hanger to the back, and hot glued the tiny washboard on.
