Remedies for Bug Stings

In case of an insect sting, apply ice for one half hour and then try one of these remedies for one half hour. Caution, apply "around" the stung area. Do not put directly on broken skin:

  • a slice of raw onion
  • a slice of raw potato
  • grated or sliced horseradish root
  • wet salt
  • toothpaste

This should help relieve pain and keep down swelling.

Country - yellow jackets, bees and wasps. I hear many who drive their tractors carry bleach with them. When they are stung (yellow jackets hate the noise) bleach on a wad of something is applied. Just 20 to 30 seconds. Don't tape it on like I did. When applied properly and soon as you are stung, it is only less than a minute and the pain goes away.

I had at least 6 stings from bald face hornets on one butt cheek. I had walked near where their paper nest had fallen.

I raced to the house to bleach my butt. It worked just like my fireman friend said it would. No swelling, no hurting and over very quickly. I would warn those that are allergic to get help immediately if they are stung.

We recently went on a trip with a friend of ours. She was bitten by a bug, unknown what kind. Her ankle was red, itchy, sore, and swollen. She had us stop by a grocery store and she purchased a small container of Accent Meat Tenderizer. She wet her ankle and sprinkled some on her wet ankle, and it wasn't long until the swelling was gone and her ankle was no longer aching. I had never heard of that.

I can also recall my mom scraping a potato and putting the scrapings on my sisters foot when scalding water was spilled on it. Took the pain away.
