Although my husband wore gloves while patching his brother's roof, some of the roof tar soaked through and got onto his skin. Soap and water didn't even come close to removing it from his hands. After doing a bit of research online, the best option seemed to be olive oil. So we gave it a try and were very happy with how well it worked. It even removed the tar from the crevices of his wedding ring. :)
For his hands, he coated them with a good amount of olive oil, rubbed it in, and then I helped him put nitrile gloves on. He wore the gloves for about 30 minutes, then used a rag to wipe off his hands. I couldn't believe how clean his hands were. The best part is that he didn't have to irritate his skin with anything abrasive or excessive scrubbing.
For the ring, he placed it in a small bowl of olive oil and let it sit for 30 minutes. You could see the roof tar coming off of the ring almost immediately though. If your ring has crevices like his did, an old toothbrush will get any little nooks and crannies.

I,ve used WD 40.It will remove quickly and is not harsh on skin. Used it for taking caulking off hands
Goo Gone did/does the trick!
Just used it on a 9 year olds foot.
It came off no scrubbing or brushing irritation.
I will use that trick from now on.
Thank you for the tip it worked great. My brother came over and worked on the sky light and used Henry wet patch and talk about a mess let me tell you. I thought was going to have to toss my good scissors that i let him use to cut plastic because they were so bad, then i read your article so first i tried it on his hands and it worked so well that i done the scissors and they are perfect again.
I'm always looking for something I have handy for my needs. I happened to have a lot of Avon's 'skin so soft' bath oil (leftover after my mom passed, I prefer showers and have been looking for ways to use it up). One day when my hands were really covered with sticky goo, I tried it on my hands. Worked like a charm. And my hands were soft and moisturized when I finished.
