To remove the smell of urine from clothes I washed them in a load with half a gallon of vinegar and then washed as normal.

I was able to get the smell out using vinegar but I had to pour the vinegar full strength directly on the clothes.
you shouldn't need half a gallon for one load of laundry. Other websites on this topic suggest one or two cups full. I'm about to try it because I have someone in a nursing home and am sick of stuff smelling like urine no matter how many times it goes through the washer.
