Removing a Photo Stuck to Glass?

I have a picture stuck to the glass. How long should I keep it in the freezer to get it unstuck? Will the freezer break the glass?

Step 1
Take photo and glass out of the frame.

Step 2
Wrap in some newspaper to protect it from damage.

Step 3
Place it in the freezer for an hour, wearing rubber gloves to protect hands in event glass breaks.

Step 4
Remove photo and glass from the freezer, open the paper, gently pull up on the corner of the photo, it should come away from the glass.

I lived in a home with an evaporative cooler which made many photos stick to the glass. Drying the picture in a deep dish of rice for a few days allowed it to peel off with no damage!

There is a product called Un-du available at Amazon.com. It is photo safe and will remove photos, stickers, etc.

without damaging them. It is great for removing photos from old "magnetic" photo albums.

Peeling a picture off glass

Step 1
Use a blow dryer on low

Step 2
Start slowly peeling the picture off.

Step 3
Keep going until you have the whole picture off.

So you'd use low heat and not put picture in freezer

The glass should not break unless it is a jar or something with liquid - the expansion of the liquid when it freezes causes the glass to break. But under this circumstance, it should be OK.

I take this to be a photograph that is stuck to the picture frame glass and you are wanting to save the photo. You should look at the type of material the photograph is made of to determine the best method. The first thing you should do is scan the photograph so that if it is damaged you will at least have a copy.

You can also opt to take the glass/photo to a camera store or camera department at Walmart, Target type stores and use their equipment to take some copies or let one of the technicians do this for you. Some photos turn out very good and can be printed on photo paper. Someone at one of these photography shops can probably tell you the best way to remove the photograph and may be able to tell you if the print is regular photography paper and would be safe in a water bath.

Most photographers believe the best way to remove a photo from a picture frame is to soak it in water as most photos are rinsed in a water bath when first processed so water should not harm a regular photograph. Do not try the water bath until you know for sure what type of paper was used to make the photo.

It depends on what kind of glass it is. If its a thick tempered glass, you will be okay. If not, be very careful.
