Revamped Spice Carousel

Revamped Spice CarouselI found a very cool spice carousel for 50 cents at a thrift store. I had never seen one with the cavity in the middle for utensils. But, when I got it home, my spice jars wouldn't fit. And, neither would many of the ones in the store I could afford, even if I didn't have them already at home. One brand did fit but they were $3.50 each, so that didn't work.

So, I was on a mission. Being at the dollar store one day, I took a chance on a salt and pepper set. They not only fit, but were cute and only 50 cents each. The added bonus was I didn't have to wait to replace a spice I already had or spend money on a new one just for the jar.

I marked the spice on each one with a marker, added my prettiest utensils in the top, and displayed my sugar-free pumpkin coffee syrup.

If you find something you like, don't pass it up. It only takes a bit of ingenuity to replace what worked before with what will work now.

N-JOY!!

Sandi/Poor but Proud,

I LOVE your idea!! I've always wanted a spice rack like this but never got one because I knew my spice jars were too big and never thought of salt and pepper shakers. What a brilliant idea! Now I just have to run across one again in my thrifty shopping and yard/garage sales.

I've always wanted one as well, & didn't think of this. How smart! I only have one question: Do you ever have a problem w/ the spice "shaking" out? It looks like it could be a problem. I'm guessing you don't fill all the way so that it doesn't. But then if you do that, do you have some left over;& how do you save that? Sorry, I'm anticipating my possible problems....

Anticipating a problem is always good. I did not fill them more than 1/2 way and put the bulk in labeled zip lock baggies. I thought of the same thing. Great minds!!

Spices should be stored in tightly sealed containers to keep them fresh and dry.

I use mine up too fast to worry too much about it.
