If you must take your purse in the store with you, pick a cart that has a safety belt for a child and hook it through your shoulder strap so that no one can snatch it. By all means, if you have a sweater or jacket, put it over your purse to hide it and keep it zipped shut.

This won't stop a thief but sure will slow them down. Keep an eye out anyway!
I had a wallet stolen many years ago. Since then, I only buy crossbody bags which I wear around my neck with my right arm also through the strap. It's impossible for a thief to take the purse without pulling me off balance. I also prefer bags that have a zippered money pocket where there are slots for each card (credit, loyalty, health insurance cards, etc.) plus a second zippered pocket.
