The best way I have found to keep my steel wool pad rust free is to put it in a sandwich bag. It lasts a lot longer and keeps my counter clean.

That's a good idea and I'll try it. Thanks. What I've always done is let it dry out in the dish rack overnight then toss it back in the box in the morning.
Put it in the freezer. When you want to use it again, it thaws in seconds under running water.
