Saving Money on Checks

July 16, 2005

Writing a checkDon't assume that your bank has the best price on checks. You can often find checks for as much as half the cost from other check suppliers.

Be very careful when ordering checks from ads in the Sunday newspaper! I recently did just that, & after the checks arrived they sent me an ADDITIONAL bill for almost 50.00! They claimed I was not a first time customer because I had ordered checks from them once before 6 YEARS AGO,( which of course I don't remember that far back). They would not take the checks back & I had to pay the additional amt. SO BEWARE !

I would like help to find web sites to order personal checks. I found a couple that had good prices, but the shipping is high! I know postage has gone up, but holy cow, they can get carried away with it! Please help.

I use Message Products: www.messageproducts.com/Home.aspx

They're a little more expensive, but it's an inexpensive way to support worthy causes and help spread important messages.

The last batch I got I ordered online from Walmart. I was very pleased with them and the price.

I just went to walmart.com and pulled up their site directory. At the bottom they had this link for check printing:

I do not suggest ordering from an online phantom. After all, you are providing very confidential information to total stranger over a connection which may be not so secure. Last time I ordered checks, I thought I would save a few bucks by having them delivered via USPS (FedEx was much more expensive). Somehow my checks ended up in a stolen car being driven by a felon. Nice. So, now to avoid the extra charges and the trouble and angst associated with compromised banking information, the checks are delivered to the branch, and they call me to come and pick them up. So, poof. Your issue with high shipping costs is no longer an issue. Good luck.

I need some new checks for my checking account, but the cost of add on options is onerous. Any suggestions as to what to include or omit?

Cheap Checks

Step 1
The bank is more expensive than online sellers.

Step 2
Use plain blue checks. Anything extra, like a picture or monogram, costs more.

Step 3
Have your name and address only. Sometimes an extra line of text costs more.

Just order cheques with your account number on them. You do not even need your name and address on them, write it on yourself as you need too.

It depends on the banking services you have, but some banks offer free or discounted checks - like Chase. You may want to ask your bank if they offer any discounts or if you're eligible for free checks.

Checks are expensive and banks know this . What I have started doing is I only order 1 pack of checks . Where I live you are required to have your name, address and telephone number on the checks. I asked my bank to set my check number at 2500 because around here people wont take checks with low numbers believing the customer has not had their account long . OK so back to your question . I order 1 box . Now that box lasts pretty long because I call my electric company and do a check by phone ..(without using paper checks use a number like A1 ..

then I call my internet service and use my debit card I have from my bank ( or check by phone ) my water and sewer I call and do a check by phone A2 and so on ..I have had my box of checks for nearly a year now .You could call your utilities and see if that is an option and most will give you a confirmation number so you know you paid it .

Find an online seller that is going to be cheaper than the bank. You might ask your bank if they have any current promotions or deals that might entice you to order from them but usually, you will only need your name, address, and phone number.

You may not even need all of that but I think that is pretty much standard. I seldom use my actual checks anymore and pay everything with my debit card over the phone but I do like to have a single box of checks just in case.
