Singer 8280 Handwheel Hard to Turn?

The handwheel is almost frozen! It is very hard to turn it! (counter-clockwise of course) There are no jammed threads! I was sewing and it kept slowing down, with my foot pressed down on the pedal all the way. I tried turning the handwheel towards me slightly, and it would sew a little more, then stall again. So I removed the top thread and bobbin, then reloaded both. Then, it could not pick up bobbin thread! Once again, I removed all thread, bobbin and needle, and made sure the bobbin housing is completely clean and clear of any debris. The hand wheel is still very difficult to turn. The machine hums when I press the pedal, but there is no movement.

It appears the handwheel on the machine could be jammed. Here is a great site that will walk you through the repair of the handwheel and how to unjam it. www.sewinglife.net/.../

Yes, since the machine is empty of thread and needle(including the bobbin) but still difficult to turn, it is jammed for some reason.
Thank you for the link, I will check it out.

It sounds like your needle is out of alignment or thread build up between bobbin casing and needle placement!

I have found YouTube videos to be very helpful in fixing things.

There are two avenues...one is general sewing machine wheel troubleshooting, like this one:

Or put the machine name and number and review them. In some cases after watching a few, I figure it out on my own, but some are one and done fixed.

I believe that everyone who reads your question/comments and is someone who has ever used a sewing machine can feel your frustration; but, there are probably not any sewing machine techs on this site who can know exactly what could be causing your problem - or have the knowledge to provide instructions on how to fix the problem.

That said; I have had several sewing machines over the past 70 years and have never experienced this problem so I cannot offer information from past experiences.
While it is true that many problems with sewing machines (even different brands) can be repaired with similar instructions, that may not be the case with your model (I believe your 8280 may be a zigzag?) and most likely, no one here has that exact same model machine.
Since this problem is not mentioned in your manual or on the Singer web site, it seems it is not a common problem and may require servicing.

The only thing that I did find - and you do not say you have tried this - is to see if the handwheel turns with the bobbin case out of the machine. Here is a common remark from the sites that offer help with sewing machine problems:

"If the handwheel moves freely with the bobbin case removed, the next step is to insert it to see if it works or not. If the handwheel does not move freely with the case removed, it is time to take it in for servicing."

I feel sure you have researched your problem also and I am sorry that no one has been able to provide sound instructions for solving this problem but maybe some of the sites below can offer a gleam of what you may have to do to get your machine back up and running again.

I have no idea about this. But I advise you give oil in these pedal and handwheel. I buy the Sewing Machine and the result is fantastic. Not Problem till 1 year.

Nowadays, with so many products it becomes really difficult to choose the best one that fits all your requirements. After all, let's agree that we don't want to spend on features that we won't be using. A smart buy is of utmost importance today and for that, Ill suggest you go through blogs like Sewist Guide and more.

These blogs have expert suggestions who've used the products and thatll help you make the right fit.

I personally got my mother a SINGER Confidence 7469Q and its been perfect for her by far. All I did was ask her what her requirements were and then linked it to the one that matched them all.

I hope it helps :)
