My Singer sewing machine has stopped working. Used it for about an hour this morning and it started sewing slower and slower. Now needle won't move when I depress pedal. I oiled the center of area where bobbin goes. After that, it worked to wind a bobbin. Put bobbin into machine and it wouldn't work. Hand wheel will go halfway down and stops. I am a very, very new sewing machine user, help!

Be sure you placed bobbin correctly and released machine.
Also, remove your plug from wall socket and then replace it.
Since you are very new to using a machine you will probably continue to need help with problems in the future.
Do you have a manual for your machine?
If not, you'll have to have a model number to be able to find one.
Beginners should always have a knowledgeable place to seek help as many problems will arise that may need detailed instructions to be able to fix it.
A sewing machine typically runs slow because it is jammed. Besides that, you can check the cord and foot pedal to make sure everything is plugged in properly. Switch the machine to bobbin winding position and have the machine run at normal speed. If thats possible we can conclude that this is not a problem with the cord or foot pedal.
You did not indicate what your Singer sewing machine is. If it is new and still on warranty, then it is better to repair it using warranty.
You could have a jam. Check the bobbin area for thread or fabric bits. If it is clear, you could have a broken gear. You may have to take it in for servicing.
This may be the classic build up of debris in your machine. Over time your sewing machine collects pieces of fabric, string , and lint. This often causes your machine to malfunction.
As others have mentioned, it probably has pieces of thread clogged up. I once had a sewing machine though, and nothing was clogged up and I couldn't get it to work ever again after the first use. Then again, that one I had was one of those old heavy iron sewing machines that was old. I'm sure you can fix it though if it's not a gear issue as someone else has mentioned.
