Small Black Bugs in Pantry Foods?

Small Black Bugs in Pantry Foods - long bug on white backgroundWhat are these small black bugs? I have found them in rice and also seeds. I removed the rice and seeds, but they are still in the cupboard and around the microwave.

It is a pantry weevil and there are several types but all fall under about the same category and all can be killed/disposed of in the same manner.
I do not think the type of weevil is important but, to me, it looks more like a flour beetle as a rice beetle appears to have a longer 'snout' than your bug (although pictures are very blurry).

After taking care of your food (instructions from online sites) you can use bay leaves (highly recommended) or any of the other suggestions to keep them away forever.

I freeze my food when I bring it home and then pack it in airtight containers and sometimes I place bay leaves in containers and I sprinkle Food-grade diatomaceous earth on the shelves and this seems to work well for me.
You can read any of the online sites to see the different recommendations for how to clean up and how to best store your food.
Hopefully, you will find a way that suits you and your kitchen.

Thanks you ! I will try some of these suggestions. Bay leaves right away. I have never heard of diatomaceous earth but just read about it now. Thanks for the good ideas.

You are welcome.
This will not be a long continuous process as once you get your pantry clean and 'boxed/paper' goods gone your problems will be few.

Just check once a month and keep bay leaves fresh (I change mine about every 3 months - just in the cupboard). Behind appliances also and bottom cupboards.
Food grade diatomaceous earth (DE) is great and has many uses - kills all kinds of bugs; even fleas. I do not use a sprayer instead I sprinkle it around my doors and wherever (all sink and bathroom cabinets) and I use a small cheap paint brush to move it around (bugs will go around it if left in 'clumps').
No more bugs!

These are pantry weevils, as bad a pest as moths

I had a terrible moth problem, and what resolved it for me was to store all my dry goods in glass jars (like the giant pickle jars) and put a stick of cinnamon in them. Some also recommend a satchet with cinammon and cloves

And of course, pest control measures
