Starting a Bent N Dent Grocery Store?

We are located in Kingman Arizona and I was thinking about starting a dented can store. Can you please give me an idea of how much it would cost to buy the merchandise for a small store? What are the legalities if someone gets sick from the canned food?

This is a very 'involved' business to start but if you're thinking about it you should talk with your state, county and city offices to find out all the regulations regarding this type of store. Be prepared to be shocked (some states are more strict than others).

Also, your local Small Business Administration usually always can provide information and usually will have pamphlets with a lot of information that every new business owner needs.

First off you need to check with the country health services in your area. This is a complicated business to open up. You will need to get permits for the store to start off with. I am not sure how much these cost in your area.

Second, you need to find your store space and rent the space.

Third, you need to get your shelves for the store so you can display your stock.

Fourth, you need to find a company that sells dented items.

I do believe that you have to watch the expiration date on cans so that you comply with the law for selling safe food.

I would say to start off with you are looking at around $50,000 to $100,000 to open a store like this.

I was actually surprised at how little was needed to run one of these stores. I looked it up lol.

I just opened my store two weeks ago. It took me about 3 months from the time I decided to open a store until I actually opened. My total cost for everything was $30k. I got lucky with my location as it already had coolers and freezer along with most of the shelving.

The biggest expense is your inventory. My inventory cost for a truckload was $18k delivered. 52 pallets with 48 boxes per pallet. A LOT of food! I could fill a 5,000 sq ft store with that much food.

Thank you for your information as first hand experiences is just what new entrepreneurs need.
It's possible different locations will differ in start up costs and especially the location of the store and contents but you have certainly given some valuable information and best of all it is first hand and very current.

Thrifty Fun has a guide here www.google.com/.../433-amp.html

You also need to contact Arizona agencies and see what the legal requirements are.

I strongly recommend anyone starting a new business in the US take advantage of the small business development centers run at many colleges by the US Small Business Development authority. You have one nearby:

I suggest you take as many classes there as you can....like we have one called from Concept to Launch. It will give you all of the resources you need to develop a business plan, help you hire lawyers, understand payroll, and taxes etc. It is soup to nuts what you need (pun to your biz idea is intended).

It is like they help you draw a road-map to success.

Starting a business is one place where taking advice from crowd sourcing websites or your friends (unless they are established business owners who are tremendously successful) is not a good idea.

Crowd sourcing for info has its place to do things like testing for product and service likability, getting reactions and feedback to advertisements you plan to use etc. I do a lot of surveys, for example, through Survey Monkey to crowd source what people want in terms of services I offer in my business.

At ours, some of the classes have a small fee, there are sometimes scholarships, but many of the programs are at no cost (paid for already by tax dollars).

It is well worth the investment for the paid classes, in my opinion.

Post back with updates! Wishing you all the best for success!!
