I'm still without a working camera, so I've tried to include a detailed description.
Leave the label on the bottle. After cleaning and drying the bottle, replace the cap tightly. This keeps the bottle firm while piercing it with a knife. Then make a 1-1/2 inch cut along the top of the label with an X-acto knife (available at Dollar Store/Dollar Tree).
Insert a scissor blade into the cut and, using the label top as a guide, cut around the bottle. Do not cut completely around the label. Leave about 1/8 inch uncut. Then, remove the label. Bend the top back and insert twine, ribbon, string, etc. into the bottle and guide the lead end of the item through the top opening. The 1/8 inch uncut area acts as a hinge and helps keep the top stationary when taping the two parts back together with wide, clear tape.
For narrow ribbon or string, a hole can be made in the bottle cap and the ribbon/string threaded through it. Place the bottle cap upside down on a scrap block of wood. Hammer a large nail through the cap. Any rough edges left in the opening can be cut away with the X-acto knife.
To refill the bottle, cut along the clear tape with the X-acto knife, where the two parts join. Refill and retape.
