Table Decorations for Church Banquets

I need some help in preparing table decorations, etc. for church meetings and banquets. This usually consists of about 20 round tables and accommodates approximately 100 people. Can you help?

I don't know what type of decoration you are looking for but I saw a really inexpensive one at a sports banquet. Of course, they were trying to use the team colors. Anyway, they had wrapped rolls of toilet paper in shiney tissue paper in the team colors and tied them closed with ribbon and the tissue paper was poofed above the ribbon.

They also used some balloons and a few flowers in vases. They mostly had the toilet paper decoration which I'm sure they got out of the schools supply closet. Alot of the parents were trying to figure out what had been used and we thought it was pretty clever to decorate about 30 tables on a very low budget. (08/17/2005)

I don't understand if you are making multi-use permanent centerpieces or pieces for a special occasion. I like mirror circles or squares under what ever centerpieces you do use. They "double" the effect of the centerpiece and if you are using candles they double the glow. They can be saved and used again and again if you are careful. (08/17/2005)

The best church table decorations I ever saw was decorated at no cost. The Sunday School classes each took a table and decorated one table with items from their house. It was the best entertainment walking around and seeing all the interesting tables. And as a added plus they were in charge of their table and taking their decorations down when it was over. It was great! (01/10/2006)

One thing my ward did was you assigned someone in each different group to decorate the table with their own dinner ware. They had to make the table look cute. Every table at the end was different, and it was so cool. It was kind of a theme of unity; that although we may be different with different backgrounds and tastes, something ties us all togethe r- our faith. Also have a cake in the middle of each table at the end of the program or whatever. It makes people mingle to get desert of their choice. (04/19/2006)

Take a box the size of the banquet dinners or boxed stuffing box sizes. for valentines we did this. you wrap the box in white paper (might have to wrap around twice) the we took a large heart a little wider that the box and taped it to one large side of the box and used three small hearts of different colors and taped one to one top edge of the large heart, then another at another angle on top of that and then another at another angle.

Then we did the same thing on the other side of the box. 2-1/2 of the small hearts are sticking up above the box. We took a piece of clear scotch tape and hooked the heart even with the top of the box to secure it so it wouldn't flop over. we used pink, purple, black and red hearts.

Then we used white, purple, silver and red curly ribbon and cut one long piece of each color and wrapped from undernearth (taped in place underneath) and brought up the small sides of the box to the top. We then tied in three times to secure on top. Then we curled the ribbon and hung two colors over each small side and two colors on each large side of the box. wW made some of the curly ribbon to hang on the table. I hope this helps some. Have a good day. (02/06/2008)

Choose your tablecloth color, get cheap plate chargers, print the 'recipe for life' and cut it to fit the center of the charger, place a clear plastic plate on top. They can use the plate for dinner, but read the recipe through the plate before dinner and they'll have a little keepsake. For the centerpiece, make a large floral arrangement in a cooking pot and scatter picks throughout that have the 'ingredients' displayed. Match your napkins, forks, etc to the color of the tablecloth.

At our last potluck I used various pastel plastic tablecloths, then, instead of making "dirt cake" with pudding, I made chocolate cupcakes, removed the paper cup and frosted them with chocolate frosting. I then placed a candy gummy worm along the edge of clear short plastic cups so they can be seen, then inserted the cupcake on top.

I then crushed oreo cookies and sprinkled them in each glass and inserted a small cut branch of silk flowers. I picked out several sprays at the dollar store for this, and using a small wire cutter, trimmed off each branch the length needed to fit the plastic cups.

The tables were so colorful, the use of cake mixes was so much cheaper than pudding, and I didn't have to store in the refrigerator which freed it up for the various potluck dishes that needed to stay cool. Even several men came up and said how beautiful the tables looked and how surprised they were that they could eat it!

Another time we did a reminisce theme and people brought in something old from home. We even had ration books from WWII. Each table was decorated with something special, then various questions were put at each place setting with questions regarding earlier days, such as, "Did you own crinolins?", "What was your favorite old radio program?", etc. We then asked questions from the Reminisce Game beginning back in the 30's.
