Thrifty Plant Shopping Tips - same plant in less expensive potWith some DIY home improvements going on, I have been wandering the home improvement stores lately. I love to stop by and peek at the plant section.

I noticed many plants are being sold for much more than what I've paid in the past. I also noticed many plants being sold in "pots" at eye level/grab ready and around the corner is where you find the plants in regular plastic pots or on the lower shelves for less. It is the same plant, same height just different pots:

Plastic durable pot (not the cheap standard ones too): $14.98
Ceramic pot with some moss: $29.98

That is a $15 up charge for a pot. You can find a cheaper pot from Dollar Tree, 99 cents store, or a nicer one from Ikea.

Whether you are shopping for plants or anything in general be sure to scan the entire area to see if there is anything better value cost wise.

I love plant's ! My patio at this time has about 15 plants, including two palm tree's and two money tree's. I look for plants mostly in smaller pots. Why ? Not only are they cheaper. But I bring them home, and repot them in larger pots and use fresh soil such as miracle grow.

In no time they are two or three times the size they were when I bought them. If I had bought them at this larger size, the price would've been at least three times more. Plus, I enjoy doing it.

I agree!

The plants will eventually get larger so why pay more for a plant. :) Plus it's the joy in watching the plants grow right?

Also sometimes if you look at the plants, you might see more than one in a plant so it's an advantage! I shared that tip to look at how many plants are in the pot.

In our area, Walmart and Lowe's will often put plants on a clearance rack if they are not "perfect." That's where I check first for my plants and often get them for next-to-nothing. All they need is a new pot, some water, or some TLC, and they bounce back good as new.

Many of the plants have been perennials and come back year after year. I have found that Lowe's offers the best discount. I have often bought plants for 10 cents, 50 cents, or $1.00. The discount racks are usually at the back of the garden center.

I never find anything good at my local Walmart. I do hear they have great clearance and sometimes even 3 cents clearance.

As far as Lowes, I love finding plants at Lowes. They don't go down that cheap where I'm at, but any discount is better than nothing ~ you're right with a little TLC they're stronger than ever.

Also some other tips I have shared about plants:

- www.thriftyfun.com/Free-Flower-Pots-at-Lowes-Garden... Free flower pots at Lowes, they sometimes have nice ones not just the plastic ones!
- www.thriftyfun.com/Plant-Shop-for-the-Best-Value.html Plant shop for the best value some have 2 plants in 1 if you're going to pay for a full price plant, better to get the best bang for your bank!

I also have some other tips around about planting too. :)
