Transplanting Lupine?

Wild lupine in bloom.
Young lupin plants or seedlings can be successfully transplanted into a sunny location. Because they have a tap root trying to move older, mature plants is not often successful. If you must try to move a mature lupine, cut back the foliage to compensate for the partial loss of the root.

I found quite the debate on this topic on this link and the consensus is sometimes they are OK to be moved, sometimes not. While they look sturdy and hearty and SO pretty, their root system is sensitive (who knew):

That said, it can't hurt to try. They grow so prolifically from seed that if for some reason the transplant didn't work, you can reseed in the location you prefer next season.

most plants can be transplanted or even propagated but some are definitely more sensitive than others and you can't rely on having it work out every time. Maybe the place you transplanted had wrong kind of soil; maybe your plant was weak; maybe it was the wrong time of year to transplant.

With a finicky plant like this one, it's a crap shoot

It is best to transplant when they are young.
