Use Ammonia as an Oven Cleaner

To clean an oven, fill a glass baking dish with ammonia and place in a cold oven overnight. The next morning, remove ammonia and wipe down sides with wet cloth. The fumes from the ammonia will have cut through the grease and come off with ease.

You must of read my mind!! I had asthma as a child and can't tolerate spray oven cleaners, so I would always look for the "No Fumes" type but they didn't do a decent job. I will definitely try this soon. Thanks....

Hello Debbie,

I have a self cleaning oven and often use this method when just a few drips great savings on the ammonia and on the cost of energy.

Does it matter if my oven is a gas oven with a pilot light...are the fumes combustible?

Hi Debbie!

Think the ammonia must be stronger in the US. It didn't have any effect. And as for the girl who wants to use ammonia with the pilot on... I hope she hadn't blown herself up. Ammonia is volatile!!!!!!!
