Use Saran Wrap To Avoid Ice Buildup in Dorm Freezer

I have a small college dorm refrigerator and it needs to be defrosted every 3 to 4 months. I have found that if I wrap the freezer with Saran Wrap after I've defrosted it, it is much easier to defrost the next time.

I unplug it, pack it with a few beach towels and a small pan to catch drips and I chip at the ice just enough see the edge of the freezer compartment. After a short amount of time, the ice just chips off in very large sections and I don't have to wait for it to completely melt. I take the large chunks of ice and put them in my plants.

Then I'd dry the freezer and wrap it with new Saran Wrap. I wrap it so the solid part is on the bottom outside and the seam is on the inside of the freezer. I do use two pieces so it goes up the sides of the freezer compartment. For some reason, the ice does not form between the Saran Wrap and the freezer compartment. It breaks free quite easily.

This sounds like a great idea to adapt for my outside upright full size freezer, yet I'm having a hard time picturing it. Could you take a pic or 2, or just add more details to help with my visuals? Thanks, Nica

Hopefully you can see that there's no back in this little freezer compartment.

I put the Saran wrap on the bottom press it up and then up the back (Freezer shelf not back of refrigerator) and on to the inside and same with the front, it takes 2 pieces to get the most coverage when I was putting the stuff back in the freezer the ice chipped off the front lip easily I just took it all off, now I just need to remember to do it on a weekly basis.

Do you have any space between the back wall and the Freezer shelf? If so you might be able to pull the saran wrap up the back and wrap the shelf. On my chest type freezer I had sprayed the walls with cooking spray and that helps keep it from clinging and I use my long Icing spreader and slighted between the wall of the freezer and the sheet of ice I just pop off the ice and I put the ice on my plants.
Hopefully this is easier to understand.
