Using Advantage for Dogs on Cats?

Does anyone know if you can use Advantage For Dogs on cats? On the back it is the same ingredients, so if one used a smaller amount of the Dog Advantage on a cat would it be ok?

I do this all the time. My vet gave me a syringe marked with the amount for my cats. I buy the largest dog kind and give the recommended dosage to my dog and cats. I believe for my cats it is .8 ml, I just use the marked vials he gave me. I've been doing this for a few years and with 4 cats it has saved me lots of money. I can't speak for other flea medications and I know that Advantix is bad for cats but with Advantage it works very well.

May 19, 20171 found this helpful

ADVANTIX KILLS CATS. Advantix has a formula that a cats system cannot tolerate thus, resulting in the death of the animal.

"Advantage" is fine and cost effective. Measure the dose accurately. Store remainder in the refrigerator out of bright light, preferably in a small amber tinted GLASS vial.

are you sure you are supposed to refrigerate Advantage II? I thought you jst keep excess in a dark bottle and but in a dark place

September 8, 20170 found this helpful

I agree I do the same thing and yes it is 0.8ml per cat although I do have 1 cat that weighs over 12 lbs so I give him 1ml without any problems.

October 5, 20172 found this helpful

My vet said I could use it also, I have 3 cats and it saves me a lot of money; a cat that weighs 8 lb or less only gets .4 ml a cat that weighs 8 lb or more gets .8 ml, it works great they dont get fleas or worms. They are inside cats.

Only use the flea kind of advantage my vet said the kind for ticks will kill your cat

I just got back form my vet with my cat. She is a 10.11 pound Main Coon and she said Advantage can be used on both but the dosage is very important. She gave me a plastic syringe and told me to only use 0.8 (ml?) from it and no more. She also said Frontline is different for dogs and cats so do not use the dog formula on cats.

Advantage - Yes
Frontline - No

What about advantage 11, I have always bought the large dog and dosed for my small dog. So can advantage 11 be used on cats dosed properly?

That's not true. You can use the advantage for dogs on cats. Just advantage and advantage 2. Not the others. Vet told me you can

communityvet.net/.../splitting-vials-risk-minimising

Splitting vials only saves money if dividing a large dog vial for use in smaller pets. These large vials will contain anywhere from 2 to 4mls of product, depending on brand. If treating a cat or small dog there may be as many as 8 to 10 treatments in each large vial.

You will need an appropriately sized syringe to draw-up the entire contents of the vial, with sufficiently fine gradations to give a correct dose.

November 1, 20165 found this helpful

Yup. I've done it for years as well. Advantage threatens vets for sharing this info because it cuts into the company profit margin. The honest thing for Advantage to do is be straight forward. Sell the product in a bottle with a marked dropper with dosage for cat or dog based on weight. If they don't, some other company will. "Conveniently treat all you're pets with a single, easy dose product"

Advantage yes; advantix no. Almost killed a cat once with advantix, but have had no problems with advantage.

Advantage good.
Advantix bad

Right you can't use ANVANTIX on cats

January 26, 20171 found this helpful

you can also use Revolution for a dog on a cat. Just do NOT use Advantix on a cat that is meant for a dog.

I worked for a vet. Check the ingredients, they're the same. Just use 1 drop per pound for your cat. I purchase the large dog and 1 tube last several months.

Just make sure you read the active ingredients to insure they're the same, can be found online with a simple Google search.

The strength is the same. The amount you use is different.
DOGS: 2-10# .4cc
11-20# 1.0cc
21-55# 2.5cc
55-100# 4.0cc

CATS: up to 9# .4cc
Over 9 # .8cc

If you buy the extra large tube for dogs (4.0cc) and put it in a small container you can use a syringe to draw up the amount you need to use according to their weight.

March 5, 20172 found this helpful

You can YES use ADVANTAGE 2 ON CATS ONLY!!!!!!
Dose would be .08 -.09 for average size cats.
Use a non needle syringe.
My sister is a vet and uses this on all her strays she can't help but take in, it's the most cost effective way to treat your cats it you have multiple... Frontline OLD formula used to be the same but since they changed it, it doesn't work on any animal lol.

May 29, 20170 found this helpful

.08-.09 is a tiny portion (about a drop). Do you mean .8-.9?

Thank you for that information.

Very helpful information. Thank you! What about for cats way over 9 lbs? My cat weighs about 30lbs lol

May 10, 20180 found this helpful

Be very very careful with vial splitting please! The concentration of the mix is not the same for cats and dogs. One cannot just divide it by cat dosage

October 4, 20190 found this helpful

The strength of the formulations is different with the dog version containing a higher concentration of the heart worm killing ingredient. Dogs formulation is 10% Imidacloprid and 2.5% Moxidectin.

per mL. Cats formulation is 10% Imidacloprid and 1.0% Moxidectin. So by giving the cat the same mL per pound dose you would be giving them 2.5 times the recommended dose. I'm not sure if this is a problem for any cats, some cats or all cats. The studies indicated that cats dosed at 10X the recommended dosage of Advantage II for Cats generally had no significant problems.

July 31, 20201 found this helpful

Actually the dosage is:
2-5# .23 ml
5-9# .4ml
Over 9# .8ml.
You can find this dosing chart online.

I to have used advantage 400 for large dogs for our cat (large 4ml) for about 4 yrs, had no problem, just use a stringe (without a needle) from a chemist, mark the stringe at 0.4ml small cat) and 0.8ml) then you can get a year or two doses for about £15 buy from a animal heath store, eg Cheshire Beeston animal health 465.Co. uk

May 19, 20210 found this helpful

Advantage does not contain a heartworm killing ingredient.

March 25, 20220 found this helpful

I've used the xlg dog advantage II for my collie n my cats. But you need to use a marked syringe to measure out the proper doses for the cats. Cats under 9# get .04 ml and cats 10# and over gets .08 ml. No more!! So weigh your cats n keep track of it.

The ingredients are the same only the amt per vials differ. People thats cats died was given the whole vial n that is deadly.

I have used the dog Advantage and Advantage Ii for almost 20 years and no issues. My grandfather and my vets use it in their practices for their low cost help programs when kitties need help and families are short. We also used it in our low /no cost clinics. Its worked well.

I do. I get the largest dog Advantage (not Advantix!) and use .4 for 5 lbs. and under, .8 for over 5 lb. cats. I'm a foster/rescue person and that is what we all use.

February 15, 20080 found this helpful

Please be careful with these potent but supposedly safe medications. For a natural alternative, try diatomaceous earth powder. It's cheap, safe and works great, both externally and internally--and there's no poisons in it!

August 17, 20162 found this helpful

Tried it. No noticeable change in flea population. Don't waste your time and money.

Used it both ways and did nothing! My dog now has a skin issue thanks to it drying it out so bad!

Please be so careful with application of dry d.earth on pets. It has razor sharp micros optic floating particles that will shred cat and dogs lungs up for a painful death. If used in food for worms dampen with water or wet food.

I use the large Revolution for dogs and separate it for my cats under the VETS orders. Please be careful not to use too much!

NO! Advantage for canines is toxic to cats. If you have cats in the home with your dogs, and the dogs are the only ones using Advantage, the canine advantage toxic to the cats. And NEVER use Canine Advantage on cats!

If you are a canine-free home, use Feline Advantage for your cats. If you have dogs, use Frontline Plus on your dogs and use Advantage for cats on your cats.

Advantage for dogs is perfectly safe for cats, you just need to know the correct dose.

June 11, 20161 found this helpful

Actually, you're wrong. Compare the two products. You'll see the active ingredients and their proportions are exactly the same between the two products.

You may be confusing "Advantage" with "K-9 Advantix" or "Advantage Multi for Dogs." These two ARE toxic to cats. But, Advantage or Advantage II both use the same formula for cats and dogs.

My daughter, the veterinarian, says so. And with four years of vet school (graduating cum laude) and six years of small animal vet work in both private practice and shelter work, she should know.

August 20, 20161 found this helpful

Your advice is incorrect.

September 20, 20160 found this helpful

Try compairing the ingreadients... then ask your vet about it.

October 19, 20160 found this helpful

You are wrong and considering you say your daughter is a vet that is insane. Advantage II is absolutely toxic for cats. It has changed the ingredients and can kill cats instantly. Please don't advise if you have no clue.

November 5, 20160 found this helpful

You can all do what you want, but my cat is currently in the hospital due to advantage 2 for dogs. Dosed correctly and now my cat may die because of it. Seizures and tremors. Not worth saving a buck or 2.

Advantage is the same ingredients for cats and dogs: Imidacloprid. As long as you administer the right dosage, there should be no reason canine Advantage should harm your felines.

However, you should never, ever, ever apply canine Advantix, Frontline or Revolution on your feline as they have separate canine-only chemicals in them.

June 29, 20101 found this helpful

I know these are old posts but others as I did may see this post.
You can use canine Advantage on cats, my vet gave me some of it.
You can't use ADVANTIX for dogs, which is by the same company, but has added ingredients which are toxic to cats.
The ingredients for Advantage are exactly the same, just that dogs are usually larger than cats so there is more in a tube. You have to measure it out for cats:

.4 ml for cats 9 lbs and under and .8 ml for cats over 9 lbs.

Just make sure it is Advantage, not others.

you are absolutely right on the dosage, have used large dog Advantage on cats for years and have treated 22 cats monthly with the dosage you listed without any problem. It does keep fleas off cats greatly. I order it from the UK as it is way cheaper, but takes about 10 days to get it.

I would not do it. It is made for cats and dogs for a reason. There are some places it pays to be thrifty but where health is concerned why take chances. My personal opinion is this; If a person can't afford to feed and take care of pets properly then they should not have them.

May 16, 20163 found this helpful

Some people got their pets when they could afford them. And then someone got cancer and couldn't work. Stop judging.

When it's the exact same product you are just wasting tons of money using the feline version, talk to your vet and they will tell you the correct dosage to use.

August 30, 20160 found this helpful

Yes, to make money. Vets agree that using AVANTAGE is safe for BOTH cats and dogs.

July 3, 20121 found this helpful

I have used Dog Advantage on my cats for years. It's the same ingredients just the dosage is different. My vet suggested that I use this method (I have 6 cats) it is more cost effective. To the person who feeds garlic to their dog...look it up, that is TOXIC.

September 21, 20131 found this helpful

People are confused about Advantage. You use AdvantageII, not Advantix or other dog products. I dont know what the "other ingredients" are in dog Advantage II, but if they are the same as the cat formulation it should work on a cat. It worked on my cat. I used .8 ml, same as .8 cc.

September 25, 20133 found this helpful

Advantage is fine just use the correct amount! And of course the packet for large dogs have more in it because of their size! That's why we are buying the dog one for the same price & getting several doses out of them for cats! For those of us whom try to rescue these loving & innocent animals, even though we can't really afford too! This is because stupid people do not spay or neuter their pets & let them run free!

I only work part time & don't make big $ but have somehow with my roommate's help trapped three strays living on our street, got them fixed, got their shots & chipped! But not before one brought us 5 kittens! The kittens were not well but now they are healthy & loving! The two boys are now fixed and have their shots too!

We have released two of the strays that did not take to being inside, but the one female is very loving & will adapt to a loving home when we find one for her! Sorry to rant but this was for the person who said if ya can't afford a pet & all their needs you shouldn't have one! I rather eat sandwiches all the time rather than steak, if it means I can make a difference for these beautiful creatures!

Exactly well said. And tell me since I don't have money. What do u propose I do with my animals? I guess put them in a shelter? Give me a break, come down to earth lady. Lifes not perfect. But my animals are loved, fed, roof over their head. Thats all that matters. You do the best u can with your pets. Money or not

I hear you sister. You are a kind soul. I'd give anything if more people were like you and if more people would get their pets fixed. We are the earth's keepers after all. I'm another sandwich person as well.
As far as the Advantage and Advantage II for dogs goes- they are safe for cats in the proper dose per cat's weight. I've been doing it for years like some of you.
Now Advantix and Advantage K9 for dogs are NOT to be used on cats because they are both toxic to them.
The other brands of flea meds I know nothing about-but if there's any chance at all that any of them can harm your pet DON'T take that chance.

I have used this on my cats for years...it is through the vet and they gave me the syringes and the weight chart for proper dosing for cats...this is the very same formula as the cats except more cost effective. Of course some will not tell you as they make more money on selling the other and you get less...

August 31, 20160 found this helpful

I have been doing this for 10 years as I am a breeder, you can use advantage on cats that is for dogs, you will need syringes to correct the dose, for my cats I use almost a ml sucked up into the syringe. My cats are big....you need to be sure you get right doses.
