Using Ivermectin or Acarexx to Control Ear Mites?

Robyn, you say "The vets often prescribe Acarexx ... it contains 0.01% ivermectin. Ivomec is a 1% ivermectin. Like Acarexx, Ivomec contains 1% ivomectin". I'm confused - is Acarexx 0.01% or 1.0%?

I will actually tell you the best thing to use to control ear mites in a dog, cat, or even a rabbit. it is baby oil. Just get some baby oil and a Q-tip to apply the baby oil to the ear where the animal has ear mites. This is a treatment that will take 3 weeks to complete. For the first 4 days, you apply the oil to the ear each day. When applying the oil do not try and remove the scabs or mites from the ear. This can cause bleeding and you don't want this at all. Now for the next 8 days apply the oil every other day. Then for the last week apply the oil every 4 to 5 days. I have had excellent results with this treatment and it is great. I was raising rabbits for a few years and they seemed to get ear mites once or even twice a year depending on the heat and humidity here. I have also used this treatment to keep the ears of my dogs clean and it is a lot healthier and cheaper than buying the expensive creams the vet offers you.

I can say from past experience that ear mites can be a death threat to a cat if not taken care of quickly.
Be sure you are dealing with ear mites and not other ear problems like yeast or other infections. All of these will cause pets to scratch their ears and shake their heads.

It is said that ear mite infections are very contagious so if you have other pets they should be treated also.

If this infection is in the early stages - and not infected - you may be able to use one/some of the suggested home treatments and still be safe. If there is any doubt then you should discuss it with a vet.

Do not use Tea Tree Oil and do not use Q-tips as it is too easy to damage the ear drum (pets usually try to shake and move their head when you're trying to 'doctor' them).
You can use different oils - olive oil, coconut oil are good - just use a cotton ball and wipe the oil around the outer part of the ear. This is usually effective if continued several times a day for several days.
Some recommend cleaning with solutions also but read instructions carefully.
I, personally, usually bought the remedy meds (there are several types) from PetSmart and it took care of mites within a few days.

If you are not sure ask a Vet, there are all kinds of online help with this. This does online mentions 0.01 = 1 dose of 0.5 ml in each ear.- https://www.bi-vetmedica.com and - en.wikipedia.org/.../ivermectin - If not sure of does check with a professional!

I am sorry. I am not understanding your question and who is Rob?

It is important to talk to your vet and ask what you are supposed to give and if it is cheaper, there are many places that sell the formulas at feed type stores...just be sure to match the dose you need to the package.

Thank you for bringing that to my attention. I had written that " Like Acarexx, Ivomec contains 1% ivomectin" instead of what I should have written, which is " Like Acarexx, Ivomec contains 0.1% ivomectin.

It states that Ivomec is .1% ivermectin but it is 10 times more, 1.0%. It states Acarexx is .1% ivermectin but it is 10 times less, .01%.
