I have an 8 volume set of the Book of Knowledge, published circa 1936/37. The latest reference to the British Monarchy is Edward VIII, describing him as unmarried. There is no mention of abdication or George VI. Can you please tell me if these books would have any monetary value?

Most of these books, unless more than 100 years old, have very little value. You could take it to a dealer, but I think you will be disappointed.
it is sad but most of these books are worth very little. It is difficult to get thrift stores or library book sales to even take them.
You may be able to find some reference to your set on line but you may have to look over a period of months to find a set.
Many people have old books they think are valuable and would like to sell. Most old dictionaries, references etc., have very little value, a few dollars at most. Encyclopedias dated after 1923 are essentially worthless but crafters may be interested for the old pictures. Goodwill, Salvation Army, etc., receive donations of tons of old encyclopedias, dictionaries and reference books but send them to recycling centers or dumps as they cannot use or sell them.
