Value of Wooden Chair?

An old wooden chair.I have acquired this chair and know nothing about it. I would like to know what it's worth and a little history behind it, now that I'm getting interested in antiques. I was told it could be worth something. It has 1780 or 1730 stamped on the bottom with a green imperial on it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much in advance.

I'm seeing several of what appears to be identical to your chair but all have different numbers and different marks. I believe this style chair was first made in the 20's but was also made in several later years and that is the reason for the difference in numbers as they only had one factory so it could not relate to being made at a different location.

The different marks also relate to different time periods. The only reference that I have been able to find that describes and shows different marks in on the following link. There is a problem in trying to decipher the marks/years in that all of this is in black & white and a very poor quality picture.
When trying to compare the mark on your chair with the pictures, it would appear that your chair was made in/after 1939. I believe you would have to visit/contact your library to see if they have this book available so you could possibly find a better picture. I was able to date some of the sets found online and only found one that appeared to have the 1920's mark.

I believe the original color was 'brown' but for some reason, almost everyone has decided to paint their sets black.

Your chair appears to have been painted some time ago and does have some scratches but it was nice that they left the Imperial mark as have several other owners.

You will find some difference in the chairs but in each listing I found the measurements to be approximately the same (people rarely measure the same way) but there were some difference in style - no middle cross piece on legs, different foot pieces, different shades of brown, some were mahogany while other woods were 'unknown'.
I still believe they were all designed to be a 'telephone' chair (set) but some people used them as a child's chair because the table was not around at the time.

This one shows the original color and gives a very good description. This is the only chair that I could find that has a 1920's label/mark. It looks like the seller decided to remove it but it's possible the reason it did not sell is because they listed as a 'child's chair' and that may not appeal to everyone. (This seller is no longer selling on eBay.)

This item was sold but has some information about the piece:
www.etsy.com/.../imperial-furniture-telephone-table...

This item appears to be the original color but was removed by the seller but as you can see from the label/mark it was made in an entirely different year.

As to value?
Since several sets/chairs were removed unsold at very low prices I can see no reason why this one would sell for an even higher price. However, You should always start at a higher price and consider any offers and lower the price if no offers are received.

I am having a hard time getting a good read on the size of your chair. How tall is it?

It may be a telephone table chair: www.etsy.com/.../imperial-furniture-telephone-table...

Does this chair match yours?

I am trying to get the years when these were made.

Will share back when I learn more. Can't discuss value until I know exactly what this is.

If this is your chair it is from the 1920s:

Putting a value on it is going to be a challenge because the most money would be realized if you have the table to go with it.

You could always start pie in the sky high at $1000 and take best offer, which quite frankly could be as low as $5.

You will need just the right buyer for the piece--either someone that has a table and no chair, or someone who adores chairs.

Maybe one of the other posters here will know more. Cybergrannie she has a wealth of knowledge!

Thanks for sharing!

I see now your chair does not have the center bar, but it does have the decorative legs. The height will help determine telephone or child's chair. The legs look too long to be a child's chair.

Excited to learn more!

Yes I believe it is the telephone chair I don't have the table the bar is missing in between your legs but I believe that's it

The company began in 1903 and closed in 1954. This website has a few items pictured and they are asking a lot of money. www.incollect.com/.../imperial-furniture-co?artist=58320...
