Value of a Murphy Cedar Chest?

From what I have read, this chest is in the $200 range.

Cedar chests are popular with certain age groups but they are still very slow sellers.

• The numbers do not really mean very much as the company is no longer in business and information dealing with the numbers is difficult to find. The company was in business from 1946 to 2004 and made over a million pieces during that time.

• I was told the numbers 7298 are for the style of chest as well the period of time produced.
• Lane cedar chests are the favorite brand and more sought after than Murphy brand but both are very good cedar chests.
• Most Murphy chests sell for under $200 and usually sell within the same area as listed for sale as shipping would be very expensive.
• eBay is a good site to check for what chests sell for but there are other sites as well.
• Here is what chests have sold on eBay for over the past several months.

• Many people choose to sell on their local Craigslist as people can see the item and there is no shipping involved.
• I generally recommend a starting price of at least $400 dollars and reduce the price if no one shows an interest.

as a functional item in and of itself, it has value in the $200 or $400 range. As an antique the value is diminished by any actual work you have to put into it, or alter its original veneer/markings in any way

You may not be able to find this exact model unless you keep checking the auction sites for many months but the other similar models should give you a good idea of its value.

Occasionally, a member of the Murphy company will give a comment but I have not seen any new remarks for a long time.

It would probably be nice if you had someplace for it in your home. This style was popular because it served double duty - used as a cedar/hope chest as well as a bench to place at the foot of the bed.
