An old fashioned sewing machine.Who made this machine for Montgomery Ward and when? This my great grandmother's sewing machine that I recently inherited. I remember sewing with it when I was very young. Haven't been able to find information, just some pictures.

This particular Montgomery Ward sewing machine has an original patent date of Nov. 30, 1886. I found it in an online auction by the unique flowering detail on the arm.

Montgomery Ward made their own machines. They started in 1873. Your machine was made between then and the early 1920s. Here is an excellent article. silverbobbin.com/.../

I found an identical looking sewing machine made by Montgomery Ward & Co. and in the original solid oak cabinet: Antique Montgomery Ward Treadle Sewing Machine www.icollector.com/Antique-Montgomery-Ward-Treadle-Sewing...

Compare sizes: 18" x 34" and 31" tall. It is in very good condition and was sold for $125
The sewing machine has a patent date of Nov. 30, 1886. Take another look at your sewing machine and look for the patent date. But I think your sewing machine has the same date, since I don't find any difference, the flower pattern is the same.
Another similar model with a patent 1886 www.worthpoint.com/.../antique-sewing-machine-montgomery...
Montgomery Ward did not make sewing machines. Montgomery Ward was a catalog retailer and department store that operated between 1872 and 2001. Almost all Montgomery Ward sewing machines made before 1955 were made by the National Sewing Machine Company antiques.lovetoknow.com/.../how-old-is-my-montgomery-ward-sewing...

So, I think your sewing machine was made by the Nation Sewing Machine Company that was once based in Belvedere, Ill.

This vintage sewing machine, purchased in its time cost under $20. Montgomery Ward produced there own sewing machines, often sold through mail order. To sell a vintage/value a vintage machine, would typically falls between $50 - $200, depending on age, condition, and in working order.

I'm not sure what parts of this machine you actually have as the pictures that I see are only of the machine and drawers from a pedestal cabinet. Do you have the full treadle machine?

It may be nice to know the value but it appears you are more interested in the history of your great-grandmother's machine.
This link has a lot of information about the Mongomery Ward Company and their sewing machines.
Here are a couple of quotes to get you started:
"Montgomery Ward included sewing machines in its sales catalog for over a hundred years, but the company did not make any of these appliances. Instead, they re-branded and marketed products made by other manufacturers.
Montgomery Ward sold badged sewing machines. This means that they bought and rebranded products manufactured by other companies. Manufacturing companies placed bids to win the right to make these appliances."

I would recommend that you check out these sites as they have very knowledgeable members that can usually answer any question about a vintage sewing machine.
