What Can I Feed a Goldfish Other Than Fish Food?

I need this answer ASAP. I just won a goldfish at a carnival today and I don't know what to feed it. Should I feed it today? I bought some Oreo cookies; my friend fed them to her goldfish for a long time and it was successful. I want to cut them up into very small pieces. Is it safe and can I? That is my main question. Thank you.

You don't need to feed a goldfish anything but goldfish food. It is a goldfish. It will be perfectly healthy with just this. You shouldn't add anything else. I had fish for years and they were happy and healthy with just regular fish food.

Bread is not good for fish it has no nutritional value. Yes it will eat it but it's not good for them. There are tons of other options fruits and vegetables mine love oranges. And I would hope he will have enough common sense to not ever ever feed their fish Oreo cookies

Cheerios or bread or anything like that it not the best option. I would much prefer some yummy fruits and vegetables. Or just go to the store and pick up some fish food it's relatively expensive and much more healthy for them.

Read lacks nutritional value that they need. Do you feed your dog or your cat Cheerios?

In an emergency situation but not long term, we have fed ours plain bread. Crumble it up in very small pieces and don't overdo it! Short term emergency use only.

I ran out of fish food, I bought goldfish like a year ago they were only $.13 but I bought them because they were going to be feds other fish and there is like 1 million of them and I have two little girls so whatever they were happy LOL anyway I just gave my fish little pieces like I try to take a roll which is bread and apple pieces off and made them a small as possible because they are still kind of small and they went crazy over it so that she can eat for days and they're not that picky but you don't want to feed them the wrong thing because they don't know they just eat, LOL. Good luck and bread was a good answer. Just don't overdo it

In addition to fish food, goldfish also like worms, peas and slices of zucchini. Only feed them as much as they can eat in five minutes. Then remove any other food.

You can probably find a small aquarium at a thrift shop. Change 1/3 of the water once a week and be sure to use a dechlorinator (at pet stores or the supermarket) in order to not injure the fish.

I have kept goldfish for years and used to have a goldfish pond. I had a lot of fish and would occasionally give them pieces of pancake (no syrup) but only as much as they would eat in five minutes.

Feeding them Oreos is in no way acceptable. You can leave the zucchini slices in the water as they will only be able to eat a little at a time. Also add a pinch of salt when you change the water. Good luck.

Not to disagree or anything but why add some salt to a fresh water fish??

Goldfish like slightly brackish water so a bit of salt is suitable for them. Other types of freshwater fish may not thrive in the same conditions.

If you go to an aquarium supply store, the employees are often knowledgeable about basic care for the different types of fish and can tell you what additives you may want to add to their water.

I agree. Feed it regular fish food, not Oreos! And you should probably wait to feed it until tomorrow, then pick a time of day that you'll be able to remember every day so that the goldfish always eats at the same time. And don't feed it too much! Follow the directions on the gold fish food container. Enjoy your new pet!

Don't feed it oreos because they need to eat soft things not hard things. I would feed it fish food flakes are the best.

Oreo cookies are you serious you shouldn't even have a fish. Of all the things to feed an animal you think it's a good idea to give them cookies? That's the craziest thing I've ever heard

You can boil or microwave leafy vegetables like lettuce or spinach and give it to the fish after it has cooled.

Natural food
Common carp is a typical peaceful omnivorous fish which consumes a range of different natural foods, including planktonic crustaceans, insects (including their larvae and pupae), the tender parts and seeds of water plants, and also fish eggs and larvae, as well as smaller fish.
*** It is important to note that common carp is a flexible and opportunistic feeder that can switch from preferred to alternative diets according to the food availability (Hoole et al., 2001).

There's actually quite a few things you can feed to your goldfish, but only if it's in a proper tank with filtration (like it should be).

These include:
Frozen bloodworms - pretty much everything that isn't a dedicated herbivore goes crazy for these. You can put them in the tank frozen or you can thaw them out. Don't feed these every day, though.
Algae wafers - these are a good alternative to goldfish flakes or pellets. They take longer for the fish to eat since they just kinda nibble on them, but they're a lot less messy and are less likely to pollute the water.
Cooked Shrimp - a larger goldfish might enjoy pieces of shrimp. Fully grown comet goldfish might even be able to eat whole salad shrimps. The low fat content and high nutrition values of shrimp make this the best meaty food to give to fish.
Brine Shrimp, live - these are especially loved by goldfish.
Cooked vegetables - lightly steamed peas, zucchini and beet tops are a good choice.
Live aquarium plants - no, I'm not suggesting you feed these to your fish. You actually don't want to do that because it can get REALLY expensive. However, goldfish will absolutely DESTROY any live plants you put in your tank.

However, if you keep your goldfish in a bowl (SHAME ON YOU if you do that), don't feed any of these except for the algae wafers. The money would be better spent on getting a proper (30 gallons+) tank with a suitable filter.
