What Is this Bug?

What Is this Bug? - black beetle looking bugI found this bug in a house that was unoccupied for over a month. They crawl and fly and are seen mostly during the night. They are mostly found in the kitchen, but a few have been spotted in other areas of the house including the bedroom and bathroom.

Looks like a member of the beetle family.
Since the house is empty this should be an easy job to get rid of the living ones before anyone moves in.

Vacuuming is the best way to remove them and dump the bag outside in garbage container.
Be sure to do this before they have a chance to multiply.
If no vacuum cleaner available, you'll have to turn detective and search all closets; especially kitchen cabinets and carpet areas.
Kill any you see and this my work since you have open space.

Okay, thank you. Although I had stated in my post that the house was unoccupied for a month, it was unoccupied in the sense that the person living there was not there for about that period. When I do see them I kill and dispose of them.

I tried an insecticide but it did not work. So now I am going to take your advice and search the areas you mentioned to see if I can locate where they are hiding or coming from.

Please check any food packages that are in your house also as the do hide in boxes. I've also known them to be in artificial 'trees' that some people have and even live plants. Check boxed/packaged food supplies first.

Sorry - most bug articles are really ads but these people are the experts so their information is usually accurate.

This looks like a beetle. If it can fly this is one of the beetles that have a pair of wings called alae. The wings are must sofer and therefore they are covered by a hardened outer pair of wings that is called elytra.

The outer wings protect the softer wings that are used for flying. the common beetles that do fly are carpet beetles, flour beetles, drugstore beetles, cigarette beetles, and hide beetles.
