I do not feel this is a venomous snake but I'm not sure anyone has correctly identified your snake.

  • Garter snake? Probably not as garter snakes have long stripes down their body and your snake has bands around the body.
  • Gopher snake? Probably not as the markings on a gopher snake are very "busy" (lots of markings).
  • Rat snake? Possibly but I could not find a similar rat snake photo.
  • Since snakes change within hours after death it is possible this is not the best photo to review but from the photo, it looks similar to the CA king snake. King snakes are found all over CA and they are harmless and nonvenomous.

There are many colors/types of CA king snake but they are banded.

Here are some photos of black king snakes - please wait a few moments for an individual photo to appear. www.google.com/search?q=black+snakes+of+Escondido...:

That snake's head shape is very unusual, and more similar to vine snakes of the jungle, some of which are poisonous...than to garter snakes....I would be very careful of it, for sure !

That is probably a gopher snake. The only other possibility is a night snake. Both are non venomous. It is not a garter or king

It could be a gopher snake, which is not dangerous to humans

Thank you.
I did not feel that it was harmful. It did not coil up or try to strike.

Rat snake. We had one in our lanai. Despite efforts to get it out of the lanai alive, and identified, it was crushed by furniture that had to be moved. :( When it died its mouth was wide open and there were no fangs.

It took a good long while to find a picture, but when I did find a pic, it was identified as a rat snake. I had another one in my Esperanza bush and I left it there to eat the bugs. :) We're in central Florida.
