I have a Poulan 15.5 38in riding mower. It will start and run for a few minutes and then shut off. Then it will not start until it cools down. I have cleaned the carburetor, replaced plug, and cleaned the air filter. The carburetor is overflowing with fuel.
I have taken the switch off of the fuel bowl and hooked it up to the harness and the plunger comes down when I turn the switch on, but when I turn it off it does not come up. Is that the problem?

The carburetor isn't suppose to be holding that much fluid. I asked my husband about this problem and he thinks something is screwed up with the carburetor, like the float that is suppose to regulate amount of fuel.
If you keep gas in it during the winter it gums up the lawn mower carb also make sure to use non oxigenated gas in it then won't happen as much as the regular gas sold otherwise use a fuel stabilizer in it during storage times you will have to take carb off and rebuild or have it taken to shop if you can't do it but you tube has videos on how to do it's pretty simple
The coil is probally no good. When coil cools off, it will start again, then when it is hot again, it will shut off.
I have a 130 John Deere that is starting then right away it shuts off. I have put on both coil packs new gas pump thing. New battery. New spark plugs new gas we have clean carburetor what else can I do. My mom is very upset BC she has spend money on this and still won't run. I'm going to be working on it tomorrow.
Where is coil located, by sparkplug? Would this cause it to overheat? Started off with same problem, now it will smoke b4 shutting off.
I have a Deee L111 that started to die after running fine for about 20-30 minutes. The engine would just stop, no sputtering or anything. After letting the engine cool for awhile, it would start and run for a briefer time before quitting again. I replaced the ignition armatures and spark plugs, but the symptom remained.
I agree that when it heats up, the coil expands and shuts off. I have had the same problem before. Just replaced the coil and no more problem.
my john deere starts and dies, runs for a second with choke on then dies, changed plugs and fuel filter and fresh gas. what might be my problem?
Most likely problem: gas line from tank to fuel filter is internally collapsed such that fuel can barely get through.
Solution: $4 for new fuel line. Took me 5 minutes. I removed the hose from fuel filter first and installed that end of the new hose.
