World Map Blanket

Silver Answer Medal for All Time! 440 Answers

World Map BlanketI really like the combination of rough burlap with satin fabric. I just had a piece of blue satin fabric that reminded me of the surface of the ocean. And the rough burlap reminds me of soil. So I got the idea to combine these two contrasting fabrics and sew a blanket in the form of a world map. I didn't buy burlap, but used four burlap bags. So even from the bags, you can sew this original blanket.

Total Time: 4-5 Hours, but the time depends on how fast you can sew

Supplies:

Steps:

  1. Rip up the burlap bags.
  2. Trim the edges of the burlap evenly along the threads and remove 1-2 threads from the edge.
  3. cutting off excess threads from the edge of the burlap.

  4. Stitch together two pieces of the burlap: put one piece of the burlap on the second piece with an indent of 1 cm (see photo), then sew them by hand.
  5. Cutting the burlap.

  6. Fold the protruding edge of the burlap (see photo). Then fold again so that the edges of both pieces of burlap are inside. Then spread two pieces of burlap without unfolding the folds and make two seams on the sewing machine: near the edge of the fold and at a short distance to fix the fold on the back (see photos).

  8. Sew the other two pieces together in the same way as in the previous steps.
  9. Sew the resulting two pieces together in the same way as in step 5. As a result, you should get a large burlap blanket of four pieces (see photo).
  10. The sewn burlap.

  11. Fold the edges 0.4" of the satin fabric with the wrong side inward, iron the folds.
  12. Adding a seam to the blue fabric.

  13. Lay the burlap part of blanket on the floor and place the satin fabric in the center top. Using the ruler check if the edges of the burlap are equal.
  14. The full blue blanket, sewn together.

  17. Make the picture of world map of the size you need - equal to the size of a satin piece. For example, you can do this using the program Paint, increasing the size of the picture by the desired %. 0.4" = about 37.9 px.
Print the map (parts of map).
  18. cutting out the map pieces.

  19. Cut out the unwanted edges (on two sides) and glue the pieces of the map together.
  20. A map to use to trace the continents on the burlap.

  21. Measure and mark the center of the paper map. Lay the paper map on the satin fabric so that the center of the map is in the center of the fabric. Fix it with pins.
  22. Placing the world map on the blue blanket.

  23. Fold one half of the paper map and lay the copy paper on satin fabric (see photo). Return half the paper map to its original place and draw with pen around the contours of the continents, seas, islands, meridians, parallels. Check to see if the contour copy to fabric. Copy another part of the map.
