Yard Machine Mower Won't Start?

I have a Yard Machine, original year of sale, 2004. It has a 14.5 hp Briggs and Stratton engine and a 38" cut. Yesterday when I tried to start it so I could move it, the engine turned slowly and the starter began smoking. I immediately turned the key to off and removed the starter.

Today, I purchased and installed a new stater and battery. After installing the parts when I turn the key to start the mower the only thing that happens is a single click or clunk sound coming from under the seat where the battery sits.

I only bought the mower a few days ago and it had no safety mechanism or at least no working one that required you to sit on the seat to start the mower. Today, after I started hearing the clunk sound coming from under the seat, I inspected the area and I see there is a lever and spring mechanism that moves when the seat is depressed from being sat on. There are two wires attached to this mechanism that disappear into the body and go from the wheel well area toward the front. I am guessing these wires continue into the engine compartment.

I am guessing my problem is a disconnected ground or a malfunctioning safety mechanism attached to the seat. Can anyone tell me if they have experienced the same issue and if so, what was the remedy for the problem?

Thank you in advance for any assistance offered.

You have an issu with the wiring of the starter if it has started to smoke when you tried to turn the engine over yesterday. It appears that a few of your wires have burned in this area and you may need to get a new wiring harness to install in the mower. I would also check the battery and the cables to mak sure you have this attached correctly. The level under the seat is necessary for the mower to start and run.

This is a safety switch so when the mover is started it won't move by its self and hurt you. I would make sure the wires did not get burned when you installed the new starter and there is an issue with the started because it started to smoke. You could have a defective starter. I would take it back and have it checked out.

Did you buy your mower from an individual?
Did you have it running before you bought it?
Sounds like there may be several problems here and everyone could name all sorts of things that could be causing these problems but all of this is just trial and error and may get costly when it might not need to.

It would probably help a little if you had a manual but you'll need model number to find a manual online.

I would suggest you join one or two forums and explain all of this and maybe someone can help you know where to begin looking or trying as they will know what questions to ask where we do not.
You may have to replace the air filter, gas filters, gasoline, fuses - this is what I mean about all sorts of things could cause similar problems.

Issues fixed. I rebuilt the wiring harness by hand.

I think you are correct. Something is loose or disconnected. And lastly check your spark plugs!
