I have a male 13 year old Sheltie. He is peeing in the house all the time or just dribbling. What to do?
Notify the vet. It could be age related and you may have to resort to a diaper if nothing else works
You should consult with your vet. Incontinence is often manageable with medication. Washable bedding, waterproof pads and, as Judy said, the use of diapers are also possible ways to deal with your dog's incontinence.
This is most definitely one for the vet as it could be something as easy to treat as a urinary tract infection or something that may require further care.
If the vet deems it just part of his aging process, you could do what we did when our when our now late Carmel had age induced incontinence. We used human baby diapers! She was small and wore a Walmart brand size 1. Since human diapers go up to bigger sizes, so you should easily be able to find one that fits your baby!
We cut a diamond shape for her tail and taught her "diapie time" very quickly by using treats. After a while, I could just say diapie time and she would waddle over and let me change her.
Human diapers are MUCH more absorbent AND less expensive than dog diapers. They also don't leak AND they are much better at keeping the dog dry if you miss the pee happening.
If you don't want to go the diaper route, for our Clarence, who won't go out in snow, we set up a plastic shower curtain and paper pee area. He was so smart, we didn't even have to train him to use it...but if you need to, you can train by leading with treats, calling it pee time (or something different than when you want them to go O-U-T). Most dogs will learn this routine very quickly!
Wishing your pup lots of continued good health!!! Let us know how it goes!!
You really are going to need to find out what is causing the incontinence to find the best solution. There are a lot more options these day than there used to be. Make sure it isn't an infection and check for diabetes. Diabetes is easily controlled and can present as excess thirst and urination. If I had to guess I would say you are dealing with old age incontinence. Only your Vet can really tell you.
Done all that.
My 12 year old Cairn Terrier girl has been peeing on accident in our house once a day at around 9 pm at night, for about 2 nights. What should I do? Should I be worried?
Older dogs can have issues with incontinence. The vet can see if there are physical issues. You may have to diaper her at night.
The easiest thing to do for one or two nights before talking to the vet, is just to try to take her out around this new pee accident time and see if it resolves the issue. This fixed my sister dog's issue as she is just getting older and can't hold it as long. Now instead of X2 walks, she gets a 3rd pee break at 10 pm. That was an easy fix.
That said, if she is still peeing inside after going out, this is vet worthy as inconvenience can be a sign of other issues. Many are super easy to fix with meds or even diet change.
If you have to go the diaper route, stay away from dog diapers and use human ones (cutting a diamond hole for the tail). They don't leak, wick the pee away from the dog and are generally MUCH less expensive than pet diapers. Our Carmel used them for 2 years and was fine with them.
She was 11 pounds and wore a human size 1 (Walmart's were the best buy). A 20 pound dog would probably wear a size 3.
If you have anyone in the family with a baby, it is best to test one before buying a big bag to get the right fit and make sure the dog is tolerant. We trained Carmel with treats to get her used to diapie time.
Good luck! Let us know what you find!
To me it seems most likely you are dealing with an aging issue. It is fairly common at her age. But you so need to see your Vet to rule out other possible issues. At age 12 she should be seeing her Vet for a bi- yearly or yearly checkup.
My dog was laying down inside. Mind you it's pretty warm today 80/90 inside. She has been licking herself clean and I noticed it seemed like she peed inside. She is an 11 year old Pitty so I assumed incontinence. I sent her out to go potty and she came back in and laid back down.
It seemed she left another wet spot so I went to have her go back outside and she threw up. I looked in her throw up and she could have eaten something weird outside, but I can't really tell it just looks like her food.I would keep her inside on a hot day. If she continues this way call the vet.
It sounds to me like your dog is sick. Throwing up doesnt usually come with incontinence. 80/90 degrees doesnt seem like enough to make a resting dog sick. I would see a Vet.
Our 12 year old Border Collie, a female, has started urinating on her bed and in our sun room corners. How can we prevent this?
By Frankie
First this is to have her checked by a vet to make sure that this isn't a Urinary Tract Infection or a renal issue. Also make sure that she isn't in pain with arthritis, as an older dog she might be having an issue getting up and out.
Absolutely have her checked at the vets to rule out any medical problems. There are many medical issues that can cause this. If everything is OK, there are any number of things to try. Your vet can prescribe a medicaton that can stop the leaking if it is from weak bladder muscles. This is not uncommon in older female dogs. You also may need to take her outside more often. Like older people, older dogs just do not have the same ability to hold their bladder as when they were young.
Our 12 year old dog started peeing in the house. She does not do it all of the time, only when we leave. She can go all day and night and not have an accident; once we leave she does.

Please take your fur baby to the Veterinarian for an exam. Ask your Vet to do a urinalysis to find out if anything is going on. Your baby is probably due for his senior exam anyway. A senior exam is very important to older dogs. Your vet can tell you many things that you can do to make your baby more comfortable. Good luck
Everyone says to take your Dog to a Vet,
like Scripture.
I am a Poor disabled Vet who lives on a fixed income.
I cant afford to spend 300.00 to find out my dog is Ok and its probably as a result of Aging or Submissive peeing.
My Dog has accidents every two or three weeks,
And he never pees inside when i am gone.
So i know its not a Health problem.
I know its Submissive peeing or Aging.
Even the Vet told me that.
Whatever you do,
dont yell or Scream at your Dog.
Thats what i did and it just ruins your Dog.
Today I let my 10 yr old dog sit on my bed. This is the first time she has peed on my bed. What does that mean? Is it because she is 10 yrs old and is getting old and what do I do?
By Esta K.
Your dog is older and may have developed a medical problem that needs immediate treatment to improve his behavior. Please take him to your vet now as the vet will be able to clarify and treat any medical problems. The vet can also suggest ways that will help you help your dog to change his unacceptable behavior.
How can we get our elder dog to stop urinating on the floors? We have a miniature Poodle that is 21 yrs old, had cataracts, and has a leg that cannot work on any type of flooring except carpet.

We had the same problem with our dog when he got old. We took him to the vet and found out he had diabetes so he was drinking excess amounts of water which was causing the peeing problem. So if you notice that your dog has been drinking a whole lot of water, find out if he has diabetes. If he does they can give him medicine which will stop the excess drinking which in turn will stop the peeing problem.
We adopted a senior dog, who is also blind, in December. William is a Beagle Dachshund mix. I was told he was housebroken by the rescue. He pees in the house and we've done everything we can think of to try to stop him. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Does he "ask" to go outside? I have a blind dachshund....got her when she was 8 weeks old. I immediately hung a large bell by my back door & taught her to ring it when she needs to go out. She still used it to this day & she is now 12 yrs. old. My daughter got 2 new puppies a few months ago.....she did the same thing and it works for her too. Because your dog is blind he might be confused as to how to let you know he needs to go out. Give the bell a try.....mine caught on to it really quick.
My 15 year old Maltese has recently started leaving surprises "poop and pee" when left alone a few hours, and first thing in the morning. We take her outside to do her thing, but she still has the indoor accidents. We recently changed her feed to a senior brand. But she did have some accidents with the previous food, just not that often. Is this age related and how can we prevent this from continuing?
By Angelo
Yes, of course this an be related to getting older. Please make an appointment with your fur babie's veterinarian for a senior examination. Your Vet will advice you on how to care for your baby at an older age. Please do not scold him/her for this action it is not their fault. Good luck.
I have a 12 year old male Dachshund who will go outside and go to the bathroom and then has come back in and urinated inside. A couple times it has been big amounts, and then just small amounts other times.

The older dog that's peeing in house may be having kidney problems please have it checked out. When they start getting older, it's one first things goes on older dog. My dog never peed in the house. He got cataracts then started wetting everywhere. I called the vet. They put him sleep so would not suffer anymore. One of the worst things I've had do. Or it could be kidney infection. Hope this helps, Cookie 17

My 9 year old Chihuahua has decided to go to the bathroom wherever she wants in my house, besides her potty pad. She has been potty pad trained all her life.
I have a 14 year old Yorkie. He is house trained. Lately he wants to pee on the carpet. How can I make him stop using the living room carpet to pee on?
