I see what we are suppose to feed ladybugs raisins, but there is a problem with that. I only have chocolate yogurt raisins. My ladybug doesn't enjoy honey or bananas too much, but I have to keep him/her captive because he/she can't fly.

Would it be safe to give her/him chocolate yogurt raisins? Also, what are other foods can I give to my ladybug?

Only feed Ladybugs plain raisins socked in water for a few minutes. Do not leave standing water, they will suck on a wet paper towel or a cotton ball soaked in water.

From wikihow.com: Provide food. Feed the ladybug with small amounts of honey or sugar. Use a small bottle cap or similar to contain the food.

You can also feed your ladybug raisins or lettuce.

A ladybug only needs to be fed once a day depending on the size of the piece of fruit you give them. You should probably give them a piece of fruit 2 millimeters long and 2 millimeters wide.

can you feed a ladybug syrup?

June 16, 20171 found this helpful

Just leave some fresh none acidic fruits in his/her cage, for example leave some bananas or strawberrys in its cage along with some hunny and or shuger water in a little water bottle cap, along with a wet paper towel on the side. Make sure there are leaves and some kind of reflective BRIGHT colored tape on the outside of the ladybugs cage, the BRIGHT colors make the lady bug I guess you could say less "Depressed"

I keep food and water in with them at all times. I am currently looking after 2 ladybirds over the winter ( I plan to release them in March/April when its warmer for them). They seem to like peeled grapes, figs, saltanas, lightly pre-soaked raisens,( I split them all in half to make it easier for them to eat) They also like lettuce, chicken breast meat ( which I keep frozen and just defrost a small chunk when needed). They will also need to have a water source, for this I use plastic milk bottle lids which I half fill with water and then push pieces of kitchen roll on top ( the idea is that it is moist but with no excess of water that they could possibly drown in. I also do exactly the same using a 50/50 mix of sugar and water. I always leave them a selection of foods and not just one type.

Just make sure to regularly check and refresh everything.

There is also a ladybird food that you can buy it is called ' Ladybird Attractant ' I think you can buy it on Amazon? If not you could try garden centre type places. I give them some of this along with all the above food and drinks.

P.S Large round plastic containers with a lid are great for homing them in ( the type that bird food is often sold in) mine is about 6-8 Litre size. Just make sure to have plenty of holes in it for ventilation.
I line the bottom of mine with kitchen roll and then put in lots of leafy hedge branches, a few leaves and some grass from the garden. If you have any moist moss, you can put some of that in too.
Best wishes
H

In order to feed ladybugs dried cranberries they must be soaked in water before they can eat them. Nector is also a good item to feed them.

I say this based on guilt I have from the past from keeping bugs (ladybugs, caterpillars, etc. as pets) and having them die almost immediately...if you are asking what to feed them because you are keeping them as pets...I would like to humbly discourage the practice as it is not natural and bugs (especially ladybugs which eat yucky things in the garden) are better off for the environment (and their own well being) outside doing their thing, than inside.

If you are cultivating them to live outside to take care of your garden, they should have plenty of things to eat like mites, aphids and such.

There are sites that say they eat raisins and sugar, but I have had no personal experience feeding them those things, but Google can't be all wrong can it :(

Amazon and some of the other big box stores and sites sell kits to help you manage colonies for your garden (and sadly for homeschooling which again, I would discourage no matter how much educational value there is in them...they are best off in their natural habitat).

Thanks for listening! I sincerely hope you take no offense to my post...these are just my feelings which I feel compelled to share as ladybugs have no voice so to speak. I am the person who takes all bugs outside when they happen in my houseeven the most disgusting onesthey go outside and FAR away!

well considering their favourite food as adults is other insects, I doubt that sugar would prove a very good reliable and sustaining diet for them. The best thing to do is go outside and find some aphids or mites or whatnot. Or also go on Amazon and buy a ladybug feeding kit.

Since raisins are dried grapes and cherries and raisins are both fruits, I would say yes. I would give a small amount just to see.

After doing a little research, it seems that you can feed ladybugs any non-acidic fruit.

Just curious...did you buy a kit for the bugs for homeschooling?

Most kits come with very explicit directions on how to feed the ladybugs they sell since they were born and raised to be in these kits and apparently their needs are different than bugs from the wild (this is my understanding.

In nature, ladybugs eat aphids just about exclusively.

What can you feed a lady bug larva? We're doing an experiment with my kids letting them see how things change from one form to another. We did moths and butterflies now I wanted to try something different so we're doing lady bugs from eggs to full lady bugs, but I need to know what I can feed the larva besides aphids?

my first instinct is that they eat leaves or other things in their natural environment, but Idon't really know so i googled it

www.ladybug-life-cycle.com/what-ladybugs-eat.html

it sounds like they will eat any other soft-bodied insects around, so if you've run out of aphids but can go collect other bugs or mites they'll be happy living off that

additionally of course ifyou have $20 you can go to a site like this or Amazon and purchase ladybug larva food

It's neat that you are sharing nature with your children.

Did you get these as a kit? My friend who homeschools had such kits and they had explicit instructions to ensure success, that included feeding and water protocols. If you are using a kit and it didn't come with info, maybe the site has them online or call them.

This site has instructions for their particular kit online - maybe it will be useful if your kit was the same set up.

I know a lot of folks love ladybugs and want to keep them, but I am not a fan. That said, if you are keeping them for love or home schooling, you may want to invest in a kit to take care of them correctly.

There are lots of choices so you will want to find one in your budget.

I am sorry if I am coming across as unkind about this...I just feel bad for the sweet things and like them to live free.

A Ladybug Friend!
The very helpful website below explains how to care for a ladybug for a little while. Ladybugs are not able to live very long in a cage as they need food nutrients and an environment that you cannot provide in a cage. Please care for your ladybug for a day or two and then release her near where you found her! Later, you may see her in a few days on a leaf or the bark of a tree and you will know that you took the best care of her when she was visiting you.

I have ladybugs come in for the winter-- I gave them one raisin that had been soaked in warm water, a bit of fresh lettuce, and honey mixed with just a little warm water. I use a dropper into one of the holes in the plastic container that I set up with bark, a little soil and grass before it snowed. All have lived from nov to now.

JUST A LITTLE CAUTIONARY TALE: I am currently caring for a little ladybug that can no longer fly but otherwise seems content. I put some wet toilet paper for water and then later retrieved it with a wet qtip and put the lady back home after on the qtip. I have just discovered it was STUCK on the QTIP so I would advise not to keep any cotton pads or qtips soaked with water in the home as I think it is too dangerous for their little legs to get caught in. I just spent the last 40 minutes slowly untangling the front and back leg.
