We had very good luck with Oxiclean getting red out of a white shirt. Soak the clothes in hot water and Oxiclean.

Rit dye remover works great.

Answer this Question

October 25, 2020

Basically, an unsuspected piece of black clothing got into my pinks. After washing (me still being unaware considering it was nighttime so it was dark and I couldn't turn on the lights for reasons), I put them into the dryer overnight.

Waking up the next day, I take them out and as I'm putting them away, two clothes stand out to me - my brand new pink gym top that I'd bought just the day before, and my pink gym bra that matched a pair of pink shorts and leggings that I own. I immediately compare them to said matching pairs and then I nearly start crying - the colour has been dulled!

It's not awful, but it's still bothering me, that top was brand new, and that bra wasn't cheap ($60 - thanks, brand names). The pink was so nice and bright before, now you could argue that it's barley pink, especially next to the matching sets I own.

I'm so distraught, my mum is convinced that after a few washes, the black that dulled it should bleed out. I'm just wondering if that's truly possible or if there is another way to fix it - or - if it's a worse-case scenario and the clothes are now dulled forever.

Thank you in advance!

I have a 100% polyester kimono, that is ivory in color. I wore it with a maroon dress. Although, I have washed the dress several times, the maroon dye rubbed off on my kimono.

Now my ivory kimono has a pink hue. Please, please help me get this back to its original color. Keep in mind this is hand wash only. Thanks in advance.

I do not believe that Rit makes a color grabber; only a color remover(?) and that will not remove color run but will remove color.

  • The color grabbers are now doing the same type of action as the color catchers so you will have to look for color run removers to remove the rubbed on dye.

  • You can use these in a basin (hand wash) and try it with cold water but warm water may work better.
  • These products are sold at Walmart/Target type stores but be sure to read the instructions before you buy or use. Be sure it is not a product to catch the color when you do laundry as what you want is something to remove the color run.

I had luck with a cotton poly blend sweater that had the same issue by leaving it sit overnight in a bucket of cold water with 3 quarts of water and 2 cups white vinegar...then wash normally. If it does not work the first time, repeat but this time add 2 tablespoons of baking soda to the mix. It will fizz up. But that is ok. Hope you have success like I did.

I washed "hand wash only" dresses on the gentle cycle and tossed in a new dress, black and white tie-dyed, that was never washed before. It bled on all the dresses, really badly on an ombre pink colored tube dress and a pair of gauze material palazzo pants that are cream.

How do I get the black/grey streaks out? They are currently soaking in cool water with laundry detergent and vinegar. Please help.

I had this happen a long time ago. Thank God you haven't dried them. Scrub each spot with a few drops of Dawn dish detergent.

It takes a while but keep scrubbing and the spots will come out.

I wonder if some lovely lady is able to help me. I bought a dress which is black with white trim on the collar and on the leg of the dress. I used Colour Catcher sheets in the wash and the white parts have still turned grey. Is there anything I can use to either turn the grey bits of the dress back to white again or is there a way of turning the grey parts black so the whole dress will be black?

Any advice would be appreciated. It's my favourite dress. I have never had one fit me so well. I've tried to buy another, but it's been sold out for months.

It is made from 90% polyester and 10% rayon.

If your efforts are not fruitful to return the grey parts to their white color, you could buy some white bias tape and cover the trim with that, or any similar white fabric would work, as well. If it is trimmed with larger pieces (perhaps even an entire collar or pocket), you may have to remove the trim and replace it, proceed according to your own sewing skills, or have a professional make these replacements.

Failing that, you can find fabric markers in department stores and fabric stores, and they come in black, generally, so you should be able to use one of those to cover all the white/grey trim with black color that way.

It may take several applications to make a dark enough color, and to make it come out even, but you should be able to make it work. It may also require re-application after washing.

Finally, I would be tempted to just leave it and wear it as is, as who could tell it wasn't supposed to be grey in the first place (unless it is really uneven)?

Buy some Rit Dye and dye the entire dress black in a plastic tub. When you are done with the dye process, buy an applique at the fabric store and put it in an appropriate place or use some iron-on rhinestones.

I have a grey jumper that has white stripes going down the arms and red details at the front, the red stained the white strips and I have no idea how to get it out! I have tried using salt with cold water and dabbing the area, it's helping lighten the stain although it's not really going away.

I want to try a bleach, but after researching I found it could cause my grey to turn lighter which I don't want! I have not tumble dried it although the it has been sitting for a few days after washing. Please help!

Im sure you have already tried some of the suggestions so I will only say that I have been able to remove some of this type of stain with the following methods but sometimes it required several tries with any one or more solutions.

I tried to be patient but sometimes gave up and used item as is or as a rag or a throw away.

1. Wash in cold water with white vinegar and small amount of detergent as this does sometimes do the trick.
I use a cup (or more) of vinegar to a bucket of water or a washer set on low volume.

2. Oxygen bleach does work on some items; just be sure to follow direction on the box as to how much and how to use. Generally this type of beach is safe for almost all fabrics but you may have to let it soak for several hours. The solution and garment can then be washed as usual.
3. Warm a small amount of water and use a scoop of Oxi-Clean in a bucket or pan large enough to hold the garment. Mix the Oxi-Clean thoroughly in warm water and then add sufficient cold water to cover the item. Add garment last and move it around and up and down in the bucket. Leave it for 20-30 minutes and check to make sure the red is not fading (I have never had color fade but?) this may be long enough since garment has not been in the dryer. Pour bucket contents (water and garment) into a suitable size washer load and add small amount of detergent (optional) and run through cycle.

Be sure to check results before placing in dryer.

I hope you have found a solution that works for you.

Can the shirt be bleached? If not, and his shirt has to be white right away, you'll probably need to buy him a new one. I once washed a white tablecloth with a dark burgundy one, and for a long time, I had a nice pearly pink tablecloth. Eventually, as I washed it, it faded back to white, but you'll probably wear the shirt out by washing it.

When my son changed jobs, from waiting tables to working in a bank, he had a bunch of white shirts from his waiter job. I dyed them all blue to give him new shirts for the bank, which saved him a lot of money. Maybe your husband can wear the "new" blue shirt for something else?

Try washing the dress by itself with 2-3 Shout Color Catcher Sheets, available in the laundry aisle at the supermarket. Repeat if necessary. The directioms will say use 1 sheet, but I have found 2-3 work better. If the dress is clean, just use plain water. This product has worked well for me. Hope it helps you.

OOOHHH-Girl. Hot water is a No-No! You probably set the stain in now. Never put things in hot water unless it's white, and w/bleach and a fabric safe for bleach. You didn't say what material the dress was made of either. You could try a cold wash alone w/color safe bleach & color catcher. Other than that -I don't know. Good Luck! : )

I added a couple of color catcher sheets, but the black still bleed into the mesh and colored it dark gray. I also stupidly threw it into the dryer. Now I am pulling my hairs and don't know how to fix it.

My husband, in his infinite wisdom thought it would be a good idea to wash our daughter's blue jean and white cotton sundress with my multi-shade blue skirt. The skirt is handwash only because the dyes run whenever it's washed. He didn't check the dress before throwing it in the dryer and now it has blue splotches on the white skirt that will not come out.

I've tried Resolve stain remover, Oxiclean stain remover, and multiple washes, but nothing has helped. Is there any way to fix this? Or is it ruined?

Been there! Not a good situation . I have had luck with covering the stain with a thin layer of baking soda and adding a few drops of white vinegar until it bubbles up. Then rub in a few drops of simply Dawn dish soap. Not the x power or any but the original. Sometimes it takes two treatments but usually works for me. Wash in cold once stains are gone to get rid of vinegar smell.

I washed a small load of mostly delicate shirts along with a pair of blue jeans in a gentle cycle cold water wash. I did not realize that 1 of the reds would run all over everything. This is what happened to all of the shirts.

The only product that I have is OxiClean powder and I am wondering if this would be effective. Thankfully nothing has gone into the dryer. How should I try to fix this?

Color grabber is usually the best solution when colors run in the wash.

  • There are several different brands of this product and these can be found in Walmart/Target type stores or on line at Amazon, etc.
  • Look for these products in your laundry cleaners section.
  • They may have several brands so read the label to find one that matches the material in your shirts and some are for light/white colors only.
  • Choose from brands Shout, Carbona, Ritz, Clorox but read everything on the package.
  • Color grabbers and color catchers are not usually used for the same reasons so read carefully.

If the color had dried in it may not come back out. Try washing it again and use a color grabber sheet with the load. Shout, Carbona, and Rit all make a product for removing dye that has bled.

Try a product called Shout Color Catcher Sheets, available in the laundry aisle at the supermarket. Wash the coat by itself with 2-3 of the sheets. Let air dry. Repeat if needed. If the coat was dried in the dryer, the color may be set.

Since you probably don't want to wear the coat as is, this is worth a try. Another thing to try is soaking the coat in a solution of powdered dishwasher detergent and warm water. In a container large enough to submerge the coat in, (maybe your washer) fill with warm water, and mix in at least 2 cups of powdered dish washer detergent.

After the detergent is dissolved, soak the coat overnight. Rinse well, and let air dry. Again, if dryer dried, the color may be set. If you do not have a dishwasher, the el cheapo brand from the dollar store works well for this. Both of these methods have saved clothes for me. Hope one of them helps you with your coat.

I washed a load of clothes all lights and darks. I usually never have to separate. But this dark pink shirt bled onto my pale light blue shirt and has left splotches on it. Luckily it didn't get dried. I called my mom and she said to soak it in vinegar water. I'm scared it's not going to work. Please help! It's a favorite shirt.
