So I just got an 8 week old puppy from somebody and it had already been sick when I brought it home and it died on me within 3 days. I'm thinking about getting another puppy around the same age. What can I do to treat the areas that the other pup was around?

And the pup I'm thinking about getting has already had its first round of shots, how likely is the pup to get parvo if I brought him home after sterilizing the areas with what's best to use for parvo. I heard bleach?

IF I were you I would wait a bit. Maybe a month or so, both to grieve properly and to make sure that your home is disinfected. Parvo is extremely contagious and spending that month really cleaning could make things a lot better for the outcomes of a future puppy

If I disinfect a rock/dirt area with a bleach solution (just to be safe from any unknown parvo potential), is it safe for my puppy to walk and sniff on after it dries? Can the bleach solution hurt him?

Ask your vet what products he recommends for treating ground areas. However, even if you walk across the ground and then walk inside, you have then contaminated the inside......They only safe way to prevent it is to get him his shots.

My friend, that I live with, mom's 12 week old puppy got parvo. I got a puppy two days before her dog fell sick. The morning her dog fell sick I completely separated mine to a different part of the house. Mine is a little Pit puppy, but he hasn't gotten his shots started because he was only 5 weeks and two days. He makes 6 weeks tomorrow and has a vet appointment. Once the test came back that her dog was positive I brought my puppy to a friend's house. Keeping Dog from Getting Parvo - gray and white Pit puppy

If we bleach the yard and everything in the house once her puppy is better or if he passes away, is it safe to bring my puppy home after he gets his first shot? What's the risk of him getting parvo. Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated!

I had my puppy at the vet's on Saturday for her second set of shots in a series. One dog came in with Parvo and had to be quarantined at the vets. I was worried about my puppy. According to my vet Parvo can be transferred to your home on the soles of your shoes, from a carton, or even touching the other animal

Take your dog to the vet and get him his shots started. The first in the series they give here is their annual vaccination and parvo shots. The vet told me the shots don't take effect for 48 hours. I was given instructions to watch the puppy for signs of vomiting or diarrhea. If the dog showed these signs to call immediately.

For now keep the dogs apart and take the puppy to the vets. Ask the vet to check your dog for Parvo and explain what has happened. That is all you can do for now.

I bought a fence enclosure for my puppy. She passed due to parvo. It has been about 6 months now and I'm getting another puppy and would like to use this enclosure if possible.

Any suggestions how I can make possible? It has been sprayed down with Clorox.

Be sure your new puppy has completed its vaccinations (especially parvo) before you bring it home.

I recently moved into a different kind of pet populated home and we are worried about parvo etc. What could I sterilize my yard with that would make it safe for my pups?

The other animals like chickens and multiple dogs and cats that previously lived there worry us.

If you have not vaccinated your pets, you may have a reason to worry. If you have a very young puppy that has not completed his vaccinations, you may have reason to worry. If the previous owners had dogs diagnosed with parvo who used the property, you might worry. Other than that, the use of bleach to "sterilize" you yard is difficult, unpleasant, not guaranteed, and very environmentally unfriendly.

Parvo is pretty much everywhere and bleaching your yard really does not protect your animals. Make sure they are properly vaccinated and then you wont need to worry.

Just cause the dog is vaccinated does not mean it can not get parvo!!!! I just had a 8 month old Great Dane get it took him to the vet and since he had all of his shots they said it was last thing on the list of what it could be. He died the next day and when they did the autopsy they said it was parvo. So just cause he had all his shots the vet didn't want to treat it like parvo even though he had all the symptoms of it.

My 7 month old puppy was hospitalized this morning for parvo. She is FULLY vaccinated and she still got the virus. The vet said it's much like the flu. Every season a new strain comes along that isn't covered by the vaccination.

So even if you have had your dogs vaccinated parvo is something to worry about. If your pet has already had parvo and has survived it can not get it again, like the chicken pox.

3 days ago i lost a 19 week old puppy to what the vets think was parvo . 16 hours ago another dog of mine gave birth to 4 puppies what do i gotta do to clean ?

First off has the mother ever had parvo? Is she vaccinated.? Past these obvious questions. Get really strong bleach from home depot or wherever. And a Hudson sprayer. Mix bleach and water. I do 70water to 30 bleach. Then spray all of the items of cloth that the sick puppy touched. Including your clothes. Hopefully you kept him contained in a small area. Clean it once clean it twice clean it till you feel ok about it. If the mother was vaccinated or a survivor her colostrum will have immunities to fight parvo. It last around ten yo thirteen weeks. The new pupies won't be leaving their mommy for a while so if you have a area the sick puppy wasn't ever in then I would keep them there. Keep the pups inside till they get new homes. Never ever let the pups paws hit dirt till a month after last sheet of shots. Good luck.oh and don't use any of the bedding the sick puppy touched.

Dint throw it out. Burn it. Seriously burn it! I pulled three puppies through parvo a year ago. One after the other. Talk about stressful. Three different breeds. Three different ages. One was a tiny Chihuahua who now is fully grown and only weighs 5#. So you could imagine how small was. I just successful reared eight puppies in the house and outside and none of them got it. So don't worry to much. Just keep the mom and the pups out of the area. And clean clean clean. Before the pups start to move around. Or ask a friend's or family member whose house you feel is safe and see if you can let the pups and mom stay there till you feel ok to bring them home. You can't get it out of your yard. Birds carry it around on their feet. Don't let anyone wear their shoes in your house. Make them check them at the door.

I recently lost a five month old puppy due to parvo. I want to get a new 10 month old Westie, she needs her last two sets of shots. I plan on taking her for her third set the day I pick her up. I cleaned my whole back yard with bleach, got rid of every single thing he played with or touched back there. I cleaned the inside of my house with color safe bleach. Do you think she will be fine?

That comment about "skipping the puppy silliness"..If any dog comes into contact with the infected area, that dog is at risk of getting it, the only reason why it is more common in puppies is because their tiny bodies immune system isn't nearly strong enough to fight it off but if you get a grown dog with a weak immune system that isn't producing enough antibodies, even with vaccines that dog might just as well get the Parvo Virus as well, I HIGHLY suggest you Treat the area, either with Bleach, or color safe bleach and disinfectant Do NOT go purchasing another dog until the areas are cleaned. Parvo is a Virus that attacks the inner lining of a dogs stomach allowing bad and harmful bacteria to enter the dogs blood stream, and it tears down whats left of the immune system if untreated allowing other illnesses and diseases to Accure which is what initially kills the dog.

even vaccinated dogs have a 10% window to come under attack by the virus, 85% of cases treated early enough and aggressively Survive But 90% Of cases caught too late or not treated end up dying. Parvo can show symptoms, Or it can hide it's self to where you don't know until it's too late. Please treat the areas, If need be get in contact over the phone or in-person with your local vet and Ask them about over the counter sprays or commercial Sprays.

You need to talk to your vet or other professional. I believe Parvo lives in the soil a long time. Bleach is what I have heard will kill it. You just can't be too careful where Parvo is concerned. Sorry for loss.

We got a puppy at the end of November. She came down with parvo within a week. She made an awesome recovery, thankfully. At the time we had already placed a deposit on another puppy not yet born. We tried to cancel the deal, but the breeder says our deposit is non refundable so we either take the dog or lose $500.

They have agreed to keep pup an extra 2 weeks to administer 2nd sets of vaccinations. This puts pick up around end of January and the pup at 9-10wks old. The house has been bleached, new dog items purchased, and old bedding thrown out. Any advice to keep a new puppy safe? I feel horrible already so please no hateful comments.

How long before you can let your dogs outside, after a pravo outbreak? I have bleached my yard twice, and my other 2 dogs were all updated on shots prior to the outbreak.

The puppy who had pravo was taken to another house for treatment, plus I have bleached my house twice.

Bleach definetly. Now Parvo can live in the soil for up to 20yrs yes its amazing. Cold or fresh humid areas are its best friend. On puppies im using the 1 egg and pedyalite blend. To keep them hydrated n help the stomach linings restore. I made the mistake of putting their shots too young barely 6wks. Its recommended to do it by 8wks. When their bodies are stronger

Is it safe to keep throw rugs, cloth toys, and bedding after been touched by parvo. We have washed everything in bleach, but I am still nervous about putting the rugs back down. Plastic bowl and water dishes were run through the dishwasher with bleach added.

Are they safe or not? Everything we read says bleach kills the virus. I have used about 3 gallons in 2 days.

Bleach is the very best product to use when trying to eliminate the Parvo virus/germs. Sounds like you are on the right track for killing it. You do not say if you have a dog that had Parvo or lost a dog that had it but either way everything needs to be cleaned with bleach.

  • The virus can hang around indoors in its infective form for 1 - 5 months.
  • Virus can last in outdoor/yard for over a year.
  • It seems the tough problem occurs with items and areas than cannot be bleached.
  • Things like carpets, wood flooring, sofas and the like and contaminated back yards.
  • if you used bleach and hot water and hot dryer for washing throw rugs they are probably safe but if that leaves you uncomfortable then I would say to throw them away.
  • It is usually recommended to throw away plastic pet dishes.
  • Once a puppy is infected by Parvo, it is immune to the virus for at least 20 months and usually for life.

If you are thinking about getting a puppy/dog it would be best to wait at least 6 months.

When/if you decide to get a puppy; here is vet's advice:

If the puppy is between 4 and 8 weeks old, have it receive a high antigen parvo vaccination but do not take it home until it is 8-12 weeks old or two weeks have passed. See to it that quality vaccines are administered to it at 8, 12 and 14 weeks as well and that it receives worming medications on those visits. (your local feed store vaccines may or may not work)

Do not purchase dogs from pet stores, bulk breeders or third parties. Those dogs tend to have weak immune systems and pre-existing medical problems of all kinds. Do not purchase pets sight unseen if you cant see both parents thank the sellers for their time - then leave.

It can still be breeding around, it's best to keep cleaning for the first six months. You're on the right track by bleaching it all, but if you get another dog, you should wait until that period is over.

My mom moved to a new home recently and decided to get two puppies. Both were from a nice breeder and they have had their first round of shots. Today her oldest puppy developed parvo. We are worried about her other puppy now and what needs done so that if Jack makes it that he don't get it again or any other dog there for that matter.

We have dealt with parvo before and know how to clean the house for the most part, but could use some tips. We are really worried about the yard. Ideas?
