Air Conditioner Repair Assistance for Low Income Homeowners?

I am in Philadelphia and my sister lives in Jacksonville on disability. Her air conditioner is not working and her income is limited. Are there any services that provide discounted repairs or is there anywhere I can go to get her funding to fix her air-conditioning? She is sitting in this horrible heat and I am worried for her.

Prayers for you and your sister.

I found some links for help in and around Jacksonville. I learned the squeaky wheel get the help so try them all and if they say no, ask if they know anyone who can help! She most likely will need to give them her details once it is determined they can help--unless you have power of attorney.

Also you can see if there are churches or other religious groups in the area that take on projects to help those in their community. If she belongs to a religious organization, perhaps talk to the person in charge and see if there are discretionary funds that can be used to help her.

If you or another family member is computer savvy, you can set up a Go Fund Me account to help her. People can be quite generous if they know someone they know is in need.

Sending up lots of prayers that you help your sister find a solution.

If she is willing to travel--Philly in the winter is cold--Just like Pittsburgh is! I know that is most likely not an option...but it could be some sister bonding time!

You are right about the heat in Jacksonville being intense this year.
The first question that has to be answered is does your sister own her home (buying/mortgage)?

If the answer to this is no - then she may have difficulty receiving assistance within a government program (but not impossible).

  • Is she really considered low income according to the state or does she receive any kind of government assistance (Social Security disability SSI or SSD, Food Stamps, Medicaid). Is she a senior (not necessary if other qualifications are met).
  • If the answer is yes then she may be able to qualify for help from several different programs.
  • When check the lists of suggested sites be sure to read everything as many are just a loan or "grant" that has to be repaid in some way or another.
  • Also, If your sister lives in a mobile home it will usually disqualify her for most government housing assistance but since this is an AC then she may still qualify.

  • If she does live in a mobile home she should still try to qualify for as many different programs as possible.
  • Habitat for Humanity may help with AC repairs so she should check with this agency before other government agencies.
  • It is important that anyone needing assistance should always try local resources first. Usually starting with local churches and then search for local agencies through Google house repair assistance low income & zip code.
  • Here is one telephone number for your sister to call to find out immediately if she qualifies for help with this local program. They will help her complete the forms she needs so she should call them as soon as possible.
  • Individuals interested in receiving weatherization should contact their local NFCAA office with Duval County residents contacting NFCAAs central office at 904-398-7472.

  • Here is a link to a site that has several programs listed, including Habitat.

  • I feel sure you know that your sister will have to be the one filling out all of these forms but if she feels she needs help she should contact someone from the elder services as they will assist her with these forms.
