iPhone Kids Mode

Bronze Tip Medal for All Time! 75 Tips

Space Explorer graphicThe iPhone has a secret mode which locks the user into a single application. You can use it whenever you hand your phone to one of your kids to ensure that they stay in the game or video that you are letting them see without allowing them to get into other apps.

The feature is called "Guided Access" and is found in the Accessibility section of the general settings. Why they hid such a useful feature is beyond me, but once you activate it using the steps below it is easy to use.

Steps:

  1. First you need to enable Guided Access. Open iOS Settings from your home screen. Scroll down to select General settings, and then Accessibility, and then scroll down to find Guided Access in the Learning section.

  3. Turn on Guided Access. You can set a passcode PIN here which will be required to get out of Guided Access. You can also allow your fingerprint Touch ID to end Guided Access, but I find it hard to access the options if I do this.

  7. Triple click on the home button and Guided Access will start. The phone will now be locked until you triple click on the home button again and enter the passcode PIN (or use your fingerprint Touch ID).
  8. On the screen to end Guided Access you can also set a number of options including deactivating the touch screen, sleep button, volume buttons, motion controls, and keyboards. And you can set a Time Limit for how long the phone can be used.
