Ground Cover Instead of Lawn

Use the space where your lawn is growing to grow food or at least use some kind of living ground cover that you do not have to use up natural resources to water, fertilize, weed, and cut.

I couldn't agree more Roy - the amount of water used on lawns in Australia, a very dry country, is phenomenal and tons of fertilizers are just washed away into waterways and breed toxic algal blooms which kill fish and make the waterways unsafe for recreational activities.

I've been to a couple of houses locally, for yard sales, that around their trees in their yard, they had summer squash & zucchini plants planted around them. Clever idea! I guess it could be any veggie you wanted. Also, went to another yard sale & the homeowner had the cutest "flowerbed" in front of her house, on each side of the steps coming into the house. I say "flowerbed" but it was all veggies. About 1-2 of ea. plant & some pole beans growing up to the rafters on her porch. I'd never seen anything like that done with veggies before. She said it was all she needed as it was just her there.

Roy, I agree, but what do you suggest? We live in Centeral Wa. state USA and it's like dessert here, we have lots of rocks, too, and weeds. It's very hot and dry in the summer and cold in winter with a short spring and fall sometimes a week each!!
