Incorporate Leftovers Into the Next Meal

When cooking a meal, look for ways that you can extend or incorporate that meal into other meals. For example, I boil my pork ribs before baking them with barbecue sauce. I then use the broth to cook soup beans for the next night's meal. I also add some potatoes and cornbread for the next night. On the third night, I have the beans as a side item to salmon patties or fish. It just makes things easier.

I also make turkey meatloaf some nights. The second night, what's left over gets chopped up and goes into the spaghetti sauce. It all gets eaten and no lingering leftovers.

My family really isn't too keen about eating leftovers, but it is a given in my household that we don't throw out good food. What I do almost every night is incorporate yesterday's leftovers into today's meal.

Monday's veggies got thrown into Tuesday's soup pot. Tuesday's leftover soup got pureed and mixed into Wednesday's spaghetti sauce. Wednesday's sauce was spread over a pizza shell, etc.

A recent refrigerator conservation that turned out very well was to mix leftover garlic hummus with freshly made mashed potatoes. Yum. A little imagination goes a long way.
