Starting Your Toddler On The Right Foot

Mark your toddler's right shoe with a special mark like a star or heart. You will be able to teach right from left while you teach how to put shoes on the correct feet.

I personally don't think this is a good idea because it's showing preference to the right. This might cause confusion if a child naturally tends left whether left foot and/or left hand. If you want to use this shoe marking technique for putting shoes on correctly please use a special mark on both shoes. It can be as simple as 'L' for left and 'R' for right. Or an arrow on the left shoe pointing to the right and an arrow on the right shoe pointing to the left.

I wouldn't mark the right shoe either, for the same reason as Deeli. I'm sure it was completely unintentional, most right-handed people don't think about it.

I used the L & R method, also the arrows. By the time I got to the last kid, I pot a small dot or drew a smiley face on the instep of each shoe so that he would know that they were on the right feet if the marks were facing each other.

It is much better to make matching marks on the inside (instep or by the big toe, for instance), so that the marks can match. This is far less confusing than remembering which is right or left, with or without marks. To mark only one shoe, and then for the toddler to remember which foot the marked shoe goes on is no easier than remembering the proper shoe just by observation.
