Be sure to cut your Butterfly Bushes right back to 4 - 6 inches from the ground in the spring.
Since the growth comes from the ground you need to keep them trimmed quite low.
Some people trim them back right to ground level but I leave a bit of the trunk showing.
Butterfly Bushes can also be controlled by trimming them back throughout the season. They won't mind one bit, nor will the butterflies.

Hey, THANKS, for the tip on the Butterfly Bush. I never cut mine back, and it gets tall and spindly. However, it does still bloom, profusly. I am going to cut it back, next spring. Again, Thanks for the tip, and for the picture of your beautiful Butterfly Bush.
My butterfly bush is not blooming. It has been a year and it has gotten taller but no blooms. What can I do to get it to bloom?

Do you have your butterfly bush planted in full sun, and in a place where the soil drains well?
Another possibility is that you have a male butterfly bush. I don't think they bloom.
I think there has to be a female and male butterfly bush growing within a close proximity of each other so the bees can travel to and fro to pollinate them.
Hey I don't know what kind of Butterfly Bush I have but the flowers are shaped like butterflies!! They're the "blue" kind.Darker blue on the bottom then lighter then almost white on the top.They even have the little "feelers" on top of their beautiful heads!!
I got a butterfly bush and planted it about a month ago. It gets full sun and the soil drains okay. However the inside portion of the bush is turning yellow and some of my larger leaves on the outside are starting to get yellow spots on them.
I cut it back in the fall. It has grown and bushed out nicely but no blooms. I fertilized still no blooms. This is the second year????
