Pick Up Fallen Apples for Horses

If you drive past a house or property where you can see they have apple trees and there are a lot of apples lying on the ground, ask politely if you may be allowed to collect the fallen apples. They make a good treat for horses and apples can be very expensive to buy. Most people are quite happy to be rid of all the fallen apples.

Pick up all the apples, even the ones you think are too bruised or wormy and discard them later. In getting the apples for free, the least one can do to show appreciation and gratitude, is clean up the giver's lawn properly. Just throw the unusable ones on the compost pile instead. Baking a homemade apple pie to say thanks to the giver, is never a bad idea, either. :)

Your horse will love the apples but be aware that apple seeds contain arsenic and can be very bad for your horse's health as it gradually builds up in the horse's system. If you core the apples then problem solved. Apple corers can be found in the kitchen utensil section of most supermarkets, chain stores or kitchen equipment supplies store and they very cheap and easy to use.

It's very easy to overlook just how many apples the horse gets over a period of time and uncored apples can cause serious problems. I can speak from first hand experience!

Please talk to your Veterinarian about the amount of Apples your Horse will consume over a given period of time. This is NOT a good idea.
