Quitting smoking is the toughest thing I ever experienced. I discovered that every time I wanted a cigarette, I replaced it with anything flavored with cinnamon. Red Hots candy worked for me and many others. Cinnamon gum helps.

There's something about cinnamon that shocks you out of the craving for a while. After the first dreadful seven days it gets so much easier. Avoid being around anyone who smokes for that first seven days. Tell yourself continuously that THIS IS NOT A NEGOTIABLE DEAL. Because after all, you don't want to go through it twice. This is ten times easier than it sounds, I promise.

A friend of ours collected all his old butts, put them in a coffee can with water and let them steep. Every time he had a craving, he opened up the can and took a big whiff.

I'm sure it made him feel nauseated, but it was a real deterrent to lighting up.

If you are a woman, get the book "How Women Can Finally Quit Smoking". I smoked over 2 packs a day for 22 years. I had tried everything but failed until I read that book. One trick I used was to drink all the water I could from a sports bottle with a pop-up top that you suck.

That helped the oral craving. I quit 9 years ago and am still drinking water out of my "sippy bottle". Remember: the more you quit, the better you get at it. Eventually it will work. Good luck.

I gave up about 10 months ago after being a smoker since the age of 12. I smoked herbal cigarettes which you can get from health food shops (such as Holland & Barrett here in the UK). They taste and smell a bit rough, but for the first couple of weeks they help you to deal with the physical craving to hold a cigarette. After a while, you stop bothering to smoke them, and by that point you have broken the nicotine addiction. I think the most important thing is you really have to want to do it, without willpower nothing will work.

I was 49 when I quit, started when I was 16.
After trying to quit many times, I tried smoke away.
Guaranteed to work and it did with minimal weight gain and craves. It really works. Been smoke free for over a year now. Good luck....

I Started smoking when I was 16 and smoked til I was 44. I smoked a pack a day.I had to quit the hard way.I had open heart surgery due to a heart attack. My doctor said Smoking added to my heart condition. I still wanted them after that and when I took a craving for a cigrette,I would put a LifeSaver Candy in my mouth.

I have a friend who's trying to quit . She's carrying around a straw cut off to the size of a cigarette and avery time she gets the impulse to smoke she sticks it in her mouth and holds it as if she were smoking. She's done this for 3 weeks now and been successful thus far. Must be something psychological,it's quite comical to see but I'm really proud of her.

I quit smoking after 31 years by using negative reinforcement (put a rubberband on your wrist and pop it when you get the urge for a cigarette); however, what helped more than anything was a quotation by former President Dwight D. Eisenhower: When asked, after having quit smoking, if he thought he might ever start back to smoking again, his reply was, "I don't know if I'll ever start back, but I definitely know I'll never quit again!" I didn't want to face having to quit again, so I never started back!

I smoked for 40 yrs. Quit 7 yrs ago. One reason people can't quit is because they fear they can never have another cigarette. They just need to tell themselves they can have one anytime they want. They just don't choose to have one right now. I put my half-pack of cigarettes in the drawer along with ashtry and lighter 7 years ago.

They are still there.
I set a date about 3 weeks in advance to quit. I
told myself that was it and when that day came, all
cigarette items went into the drawer. I can have one anytime I choose. I just haven't chose to have one yet. I've told several people this. At least three people I know have quit this way. Good luck.

I just got here, today, and what i find funny is someone telling a cocain addict to keep a fresh syringe handy and a full oz in the drawer just in case you chose to loose and go back to your addiction.

The biggest mistake you can make is keep cigs laying around so you can say you are a tough guy and chose to quit! and will prove it by keeping cigarettes and dirty ashtrays around to make the process harder for you to deny yourself that one cigarette.

The worst thing you can do is keep any smoking related ques around. Ashtrays, must gooooo. lighters gone...... matches, gone............ Car ashtrays cleaned. All smoking related items must be cleaned and out of your new non smoking environment.

After that its one cigarette at a time sweet jesus!!!
