Cutting Your Own Hair At Home

I have been cutting my own hair for quite some time. First you need to invest in a good pair of scissors. I bought mine from a beauty shop supplier.

I lean over and gather all my hair into a pony tail on top of my head and fasten it with an elastic band. I then stand up and trim the ends. Next I lean over again and put it in a pony tail at the back of my head. I then trim off the ends.

I look at it the mirror and make sure the ends are even on both sides of my head. I then layer it using a comb to bring the hair up to the top of my head and trim the ends to different lengths. After this, I will trim the ends whenever I need to to keep it at the same length.

That isn't a good way to trim your hair unless you wanted your hair in what is the 60's shag. I wouldn't suggest this for anyone.

If money is a problem then there are coupons regularly from Great Clips to get a haircut for $4.99 and it's by a professional.

@AngelMum1, I used to look for coupons and used them for several of the cost cutter type salons. I finally stopped though, when I laughed at the latest ugly haircut and said 'I can do something this awful to myself for free!'

I also use the pony tail at the crown haircut method, although I leave it at the one pony tail trim and don't go as far as Laurie does-anymore:) I've used the two pony tail method, and layered using the tips she wrote about; it does give a sort of 60s-70s style, but it also frees up weight on the hair and can be styled by scrunching.

My hair looks pretty good using the one pony tail trim-the layers are long and the weight pulls out the wave so that I have a nice bit of hair to work with when I want to 'do' my hair for special occasions.

I'm giving this tip of Laurie's a thumbs-up because I know it works, and has saved me a lot of money over the years.

I have short curly hair and have cut it myself for over 30 years.

I am giving this a thumbs up too. I cut my hair for years and always had many compliments on the cut. I have seen what some "$4.99 pro's" have since done to my hair and it's not pretty.

If you are able to cut your own hair the way you want it that is great. Thank you for the great tip!

Also, I have been using a Robo-cutter (you hook it onto the vacuum cleaner) and I've been cutting me and my husband's hair this way for 25+ years. It costs $50 but sure saves money!

Definitely NO to do-it-yourself haircut. Some things are better left to the professionals. You may think it looks ok but...

I feel that it is a good idea, if you know what you are doing. I find people who are better in art, do a great job in cutting their own hair. I have been saving so much money over the years cutting my own hair myself and I get a lot of compliments on my hair.

I started cutting my hair when I was a teen and have been doing it ever since. I rarely ever go to a beauty parlor. When I was in my 20's I also decided to learn how to groom dogs and found it came very easy to me. I did the best job grooming Poodles out of everyone in my class and I groomed many other types of doggies hair styles through the years.

I do believe that cutting my own hair made me a better groomer for cats and dogs alike. I have also had people ask me to cut their hair and have kept coming back through the years. Just to let you know I have had long hair the majority of my life and for some professionals they have found trimming the ends to be a challenge. I have done a better job then some so called professionals, as I found that they would not trim the ends of my hair evenly. Why pay for a messed up hair cut, I would rather do it myself!
