Using Fireplace Ashes In Your Garden

Use ashes from your fireplace to sprinkle in your garden. It wards off slugs, as well as many other harmful insects. The ashes act as shards of glass as they crawl on the dirt.

Coal ahses are not good for the soil and woodashes should be added sparingly - a sprinkle as Palma suggests - too much wood ash is also not good for the soil.

ashes are water soluble and will raise the ph level quickly if over application occurs. A slight dusting once a year should do no damage and will raise potassium levels etc. Be careful on soils that are already have a high lime content!!

Best to have a light application only in autumn. The only other time to use them is after PH tewting so that you know it won't be too much alkaline effect on the soil. i always want to use them more for slugs but am alwys hesitant because of the alkaline effect.
